As per top really, I don't like the chunky, ill-fitting numberplate mount on the front of my car and want it replaced!
A friend of mine has a reflective stick-on, on his Mk1, is there anything to stop me doing the same?
I understand there could be MOT problems and just want to know if there is any way around that?

Number plates have to meet a certain BS standard, which contains requirements of rigidity, to be legal. Therefore no "sticker backed" plates are legal, regardless of any other factor.

An MOT only checks the legality of the plate at the time of the test, it says nothing about the plate 5 minutes before or 5 minutes after the test. Obviously I wouldn't recommend it, but itis therefore theoretically possible for you to fit a normal, legal plate to the car, perhaps by 3M double sided tape, just for the MOT and remove it straight afterwards.

My Mk1 has a stick-on plate.

Passed it's MOT last month without a mention.

My Mk2.5 has had a stick-on plate for 5 years with no problem. It failed once (plate should have a 2001+ E-mark stamped on it - rear plate failed too because it had a pre-2001 E-marked plate) but the MOT reg that caused it to fail has been withdrawn so it's been fine the last 2 years.
As long as it's black letters on a white background and everything is the right size, colour, font, spacing etc. then you won't have a problem.

The police couldn't care less as long as speed cameras can see it rolleyes

I took the plate off, removed the plinth and screwed the plate back directly to the bumper. Looks loads better and is 100% legal...

I have thought about that, but I prefer the stick-on look. smile

Thanks chaps, pretty much what I expected!
I'll get one stuck on and see what happens come MOT time, i'll either stick on a 'proper' one temporarily or just see if they fail it.

Interesting thread. I'm sick of people smashing my plastic surround whilst parking, I can't afford £20 every 3 weeks! Though if I fit a stick on plate they'll just smash into my bonnet/bumber instead. Where's that angry psychopath smilie?!

That's what I'll be going for.
I think I may just stick on a 'regular' numberplate come MOT time... smile

I got my stick on plate from this guy
http://www.craigsplates.com/
Passed MOT no problems, the background is the proper reflective material & font size/type correct too.
I also work with some Road Policing officers, who said he had more important things to worry about.
So my advice would be get the stick on one, but make sure everything on it is legal and that it is easy seen by scameras where you stick it.

Not sure I want to know who did it if you know what I mean!
