Learning to drive an MX5 properly
Discussion
Hi everyone,
i am new to the MX5, i have had a UK 1996 1.6 for 2 months now and am enjoying it greatly.
I haven't driven rear wheel drive before only front/4 wheel drive.
Does anyone know anywhere in Yorkshire where i can safely test the limits of the car, grip, handling etc. and learn more about how it reacts? I cannot do this on the road due to dogs, kids and lamposts, all things i would like to avoid. I do not mind paying, just not £200 for a driving course. I just want to play around!
Thanks in advance,
Mark.

I did a half day with Bill Gwynne (years a go) and had a great time a learned a lot about RWD for not too much money.

Give him a shout with your requirement and see what he can do for you?

I'm doing this:

I know it's not exactly local but I'm travelling down from Merseyside for it. Comes highly recommended.

Throughout the year you can expect driving events organised by all sorts to be at Elvington airfield just outside york.

Failing that: I think the north york moors are in Yorkshire

Plenty of decent quiet roads up there. Just watch out for white pick-up trucks with truckman tops, they are cash farmers, but dont seem to mind people making safe progress.

Thanks for the replies. The Elvington airfield seems to suit my needs. Tockwith has also been mentioned to me, so i'll try to contact both. I just want me, the car a large expanse of tarmac.
I already bang around North Yorkshire with regularity, but i am always conservative, too many stone walls and ditches, if i make a mistake. As i said i really don't know the cars limits (or mine) yet, so a large, safe airfield sounds like the best place to test it out.
Again thanks to all.

You don't have to go fast to drive 'properly' - use the slow-in, fast-out method and focus on being exceptionally smooth - just like Jenson Button! Those two exceedingly small tips should see you become skilled and safe.

Good Luck!
