I want to put some decent speakers in the mk1 doors the panel the speaker sits behind looks like it pops off I think. Or is there a hidden screw? Or do I have to take the whole door panel off?

Hello mate smile

You need to unscrew the armrest - 3 screws

Unscrew the plastic surround for the door handle and remove - 1 screw

The window winder (if manual) is held on with a small metal clip. I used a bin bag rolled up, slide it behind the winder and plastic ring (which is in a upwards vertical position) and pull down with both hands to push the clip off

The door panel itself is held on with a load of poppers - coax these off without bending the panel too much as the poppers can break off. A nice even tug should save them.

The last stage you need to give the panel a tap upwards whilst angling the panel outwards a bit to unlatch it from the top of the door.

The speakers then held in with 4 screws i think.

Piece of piss smile

I think there are two types. One has a squarish surround/grille, not sure about these. The other has the usaul round black grille, for these you will need to remove the door cards.
Not a big job (+-15mins); remove handles & door opener, gently pulling upwards from the bottom of the card the fastners will undo & you can wiggle the card out that way to reveal the speakers.

You don't need to take the door cards off. Of course I only found that out after the fact.

Removing the door card is a piece of cake anyway, I had to do it last weekend to fix my window regulator cables (not actually as difficult as everyone makes out!)

Ahh. If it's the "teardrop" steel one that the specials had, then the doorcard does need to come off it's very easy to do.

That was mine, though I got them of to find I had some decent-looking Sony co-axial ones. also found that I had headrest speakers only the last guy didn't wire them up. Bonus! Bought some aftermarket ones from MX5 parts, but TBH they sound OK as they are.

As above; piece of piss - the only tricky bit is getting the window winder off, method for which is well described at the top of the thread. While you're at it you may as well give the moving parts of the winding mechanism a squirt of grease.

I'm sure you can work out from my picture the reason why I removed them wink The crackling noise was rather pronounced. RIP cheapo 20 year old paper cone foam flange speakers cry
