JRSC - Colder air
Discussion
Wondering about this, seeing as the intake is pretty close to the exhaust!
I saw this:

Which looks handy, but there's always one prohibitive factor with Moss..
Is there a solution/bodge I can do that doesn't cost £1239562469?
Cheers
PS if it's not going to make a blind bit of difference to anything, even on a hot summer's day, do say. I've always thought colder air = better though. Especially with the charger.
PPS I don't want a headlight cover vent

Any good? Used with a headlight lid with a cold air feed :-)
Edit : Sorry didn't see you headlight cover vent comment.

Fulla I bought the turbo MX5 off said he did some tests on one of those headlight lid vents - turned out that once up to speed air was actually being forced out the vent rather than coming in.
AFAIK about the best 'normal' option is through the plate at the back of the engine bay, drawing from the high pressure zone there.
Found this pic on the net of a fancy-looking kit that avoids the hassle of putting a hole in that plate and moving the washer bottle:

I bodged one together with cardboard as a template so I could make a real one out of aluminium. I haven't gotten around to making it yet though so have been running with a cardboard air-box for about 5 years

pics?Tempting anyway! Might have a look at doing the same at the weekend, then chopping up a panel from an old computer case or something

Do I need anything else apart from a silicone hose and an air filter if I'm going to 'move' the JRSC filter?

Just found this
Looks good, still a bit pricey though! But at least you will get a quality filter etc
Edit: Almost $70 for shipping, screw that

Lazza - why take a step backwards - you could class the 'carboard' one as 'composite!'
As for the one gfound on teh net - it looks somewhere between over and under engineered. There's a load of trouble to get the feed from the scuttle, and sealing it to the bonnet, but the back face isn't sealed against the bulkhead (notice the daylight where the tubes/wires pass through to the left of the bottle as you look at it)
With carbs you were supposed to leave this kind of airbox open so it didn't pressurise the intakes and mess up the carburetion, but when you're running MAF this wouldn't be an issue.

pics?

The cardboard has since been covered with heat reflective Radiator backing so doesn't look as bad as when it said "Karrimor" all over it
