When I got my 1st MX-5 back in early '98 everyone used to wave.
Then the Mk2 was launched and the waves then came only from Mk1s and the occasional Mk2.
As the years went on the wave became a bit diluted i.e. a few more Mk2 started to wave but less Mk1s bothered.
Then the Mk3 was launched and it was a similar story - very few Mk3 waves.
As the years go by a few more Mk3 have started waving but there are now even less Mk1 & Mk2 waves.
Basically, I think there was more camaraderie when everyone was driving basically the same car. Now there are 3 different types that spirit seems to have died.

Even more chance of a wave if roof is down when it's not sunny or if it's raining
