I'm thinking of getting an induction kit for my 1.8, mainly for the noise.

Any experience of which to get. Obviously I know I probably wont gain much, if any power, but I dont want to lose any either, but its mainly for the sound, so which one is the best?

My research thus far points me towards the K&N stuff, but I was just wondering if anyone had any input?

I can only comment on the K&N Typhoon system - I absolutley love it. The noise is fantastic but is not intrusive when pootling around town. Took 30mins to fit and can be removed when you sell the car and sold on Ebay for a little less than you paid retail.

Only thing is the Typhoon seems to be for the Mk2 not for the Mk1 frown

JUst drill some big holes in the bottom half of the airbox at the wing side.

more induction noise at £0

K&N et al will give you noise at the expense of £30-200

not owrth it imo, always just drill the airboxes for better noise and OEM looks

Then you can drive it to see your mates at the local McDonalds and show off with trays under your erm..... front wheels

Dont most of the kit suffer from heat soak? the only one i would consider getting is the jackson racing item that has a scoop up by the windscreen but i wont pay the premium they ask for !

Holes in the bottom of the airbox doesnt sound such a bad idea, could always team that with a k&n panel filterbiggrin

Don't see how a standard looking airbox fits with the above statement. If anything, induction kits are the chav mod of choice.

'gives 15brake innit'

You'll also find that on NA cars, properley drilled airboxes fed via a venturi and CAI will outperform 'induction kits' and still cost less. More so i would imagine in a 5 as the airfilter is going to be placed at the back of the engine bay.

Plus, original filters are cheap to replace. Win Win imo.

My car came with an Apexi Power Intake, which sounds really very good IMHO.

Came top in this test too:

The Apexi is, IMHO, probably the best of the "dry" cone filters, have used plenty of em in other cars.

That "TEST" however has been around for years & common consensus on many other Jap type forums is that it is of an infomercial nature.

If you want a loud induction noise you will be best off with a foam based filter (like the pipercross one) rather than a paper and steel mesh one (like the k&n and apexi ones).

If you want the best noise, change your exhaust...

I've already got a decent exhaust and decat, I just want a more throaty sound.

Cheers for the suggestions, tempted just to try drilling the airbox first of all and see how that feels.

I've drilled the airbox now, on the bottom, at least half of the bottom of the airbox is now exposed.

Doesn't sound much different under part load or at low revs, but it has a more aggressive growl at high revs which is pretty addictive. And I know it wont give more power, but it really does seem to rev more keenly at the very top end, always felt slightly reluctant before (although coming from the likes of an Integra Type-R most things will), but it hasn't ever since I've done it (even in this hot weather).

Definitely a good little free mod. I can't see any down sides.

Now I'm wondering though if a proper induction kit, like the one that puts the air filter behind the headlight and a vented headlight cover might make even more difference to sound / response?

i'm gonna have to disagree sorry, my brother used to have a 182 with a k&n induction kit an it sounded miles better than his mates(identical) car, which had a pipercross induction kit on it...his mate has now bought the k&n kit off my bro due to this..

Paper filters also offer the best filtration (and are cheap)

I'm going to be drilling my airbox soon, will post up some vids of before and after.

Where did people drill holes?

I just want some noise, not bothered by trying to get any extra power or anything, just abit of induction noise.

I've drilled some holes now.. Its actually dead good, I love it.

Not too loud, but loud enough to sound like its supposed to be like that from the factory.

Maybe time for a K&N Panel Filter though..

I drilled mine in the bottom of the air box. Lots of holes so about half of the bottom is now exposed. I'm glad I did it... Feels a touch more eager at the top end and gives it more of a growl.
