So I bought my mk1 1.8 a while ago. One of the main reasons for the buy was so I could learn some mechanics, the plan was/is to do all the usual stuff, suspension/exhaust/intake/ecu and hopefully one day FI.

The problem is, I think I bought the worst mk1 1.8 possible. It had everything wrong, needed a new roof, had some dents that needed sorting. Still has some sill rust that needs sorting. Then needed CAS o-ring, clutch slaved cylinder, and had a water leak. I shouldn't have bought this car. But I did.

I've had the dents and roof fixed. My first task was the slave cylinder, which I managed to do by myself, although needed some help for getting the air out of the system. Anyway, while I was having the roof and dents done, I got them to identify the water leak. I was told it was the water pump and quoted a mega sum for doing it. it wasn't too bad at that point and money was sad so I told them not to do it then.

So today I spent the day (yes, day), changing the CAS o-ring, as I couldn't get the dogs in again after i'd got them out, I ended up taking the cam cover off and quickly got the CAS back in after that, didn't have a new gasket with me though, so I'm pretty sure it's going to be leaking now, which is ace.

I then started the car, and water started spraying everywhere, all over everything. After some poking, it turned out to be the metal t-piece pipe that comes out of (and should still be attached to) the thermostat housing.

So I started the day meaning to fix the cas o-ring, and now have a mighty water leak and a leaking cam cover.

I would attempt the thermostat housing myself, which I understand is a cambelt off job, but I'm supposed to be driving my car to le mans in 1.5 weeks, so I'm going to have to pay the people that can't identify a water leak a lot of money to change it. Sad times.

If the thermostat housing is broken and the water pump is leaking then you might as well do them both at the same time as a cam belt & pulley change.

Salgar, give Mark at Freelance Mazda a call. He is based in Chatham so not too far. He is very good and very reasonably priced. He will sort you out, no problem.

As above the T piece can be codged but really needs a new housing.

When you do the W pump you have to do the cambelt anyway so its lucky that the T piece went now rather than later.

I charge £195 for cambelt and water pump so its not too bad really.

Far better to do now than get stranded in France.
