Mk 3 Brake Discs
Discussion
Had the wife's Mk3 Sport in for its four year service on the weekend and was informed the disc on the front are corroded badly on the rear and the rear discs are corroded both sides.
I was somewhat alarmed considering the vehicle is garaged and has only covered 23,000 miles. I was also informed that it is a common problem.
I want now to change the discs although not with Mazda parts if this is a common problem. Anyone had the same problem? Whats the best disc to change to. I would prefer to change to a german manufactured disc if there is one available.

All discs corrode (including expensive German discs). That corrosion usually gets rubbed off after the 1st time you brake. If it's eaten in deeper than that I'd be massively surprised. The only way the corrosion won't get swept off is if the callipers are seized in which case changing the discs isn't the answer.
Yes I have checked them myself and yes they are bad. I have contacted Mazda complaining about the poor quality in that the vehicle has only covered 23000 miles.
I changed the front pads at 16000 because they were so low. On my SLK I did not need to change the pads until over 30,000 miles and they took a lot more stick than that for which the wife drives her beloved MX5
It was not the stealership management who pointed the discs out, it was a genuine technician who also commented that its a common problem for discs not lasting on the model.

I now have got Mazda UK involved to investigate the matter having had one of thier main dealers report the problem. 4 years old and having only covered 23k is not good for wear and tear therefore, although the car is out of warranty by a year Mazda should look to replacing defective (pitted to an high degree) discs
