I've recently swapped from a sensible car (VW Golf GTi) and a classic (MGB GT) to just an MX5.

The thing I'm really missing about the B is the noise... what can I do to my MX5 (a 1.6 Mk2.5) to make it sound better?

I'm guessing exhaust or an induction kit are the obvious things... how much could (should?) I pay, and for what?

I've seen many good reviews on mx5parts for the K&N typhoon kit (and the cheaper one too) but I've always been slightly sceptical of these things as they look very "bling".

Any ideas?

I was thinking about a Typhoon for mine, but i had a cone filter left over from my Honda days so fitted that and o get nice induction roar on wide open thottle.

My backbox needs replaced so i will be fitting an mx5 parts stainless box which should add to the noisexas well - make it sound more like a sports car.

Incidentally, i used to run a '72 BGT with twin K&N filters and a cherry bomb exhaust which sounded lovely! I used to drive thru tunnels with the Webasto fully back just for fun biggrin

Typhoon et al are a complete waste of money imo.

take out the lower part of the airbox, drill some big holes in it and refit. the noise will be increased and remin the stock look.

I used to plan my routes to go through tunnels when I had the B! (Sad perhaps?).

Holes in the airbox eh? when you say big, how big exactly?

Which K&N kit have you got? I wonder if it's worth going all out for the Typhoon... or if the 57i would do the job.

I've got the 57i, and it does the job - better throttle response, nice noise, zero noticable increase in power.

The only negative is the useless piping included to provide a 'cold air feed'. You will have to sort something yourself, maybe a vented headlight or something.

I do find myself hankering after a proper cold air induction kit -

I can't justify spending £400 on it though.

The MX5 parts SS cat back should be a no-brainer though, awesome value:

Get a hole saw and put two big ones in the side or front. loads more noise under load (same at idle) looks stock and replace the filter with a cheap OEM type.

Unless you spend £££ you are not going to see big gains, maybe 1-3hp at best.

Those typhoons and other carbon airboxes / filters are not worth £200 etc better value to put that towards chassis mods or things that actually make your car faster overall.

Cant imagine those big foam / cotton filters are effective when sat over the exhaust manifold either(in the mx5)

as always, its each to their own. i just think they are a false economy

I bought this one

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-85-97-MX3-MX5-MX6-RX7-...

Does me fine, built some brackets and a heat shield and its absolutely spot on and sounds fantastic even with the standard exhaust system and IMO better than my friends one with standard air box and racing beat system.

Scuse my dirty bay hehe

Typhoon & MX5parts twin exit exhaust on mine.......Looks & sounds great IMO which is why i fitted them. I too came from MGBs & Spitfires & felt the only thing lacking about 5s was they don`t sound like a sports car should.

I just did five holes with a hole saw.Four in my airbox (2 inch) and one in the palm of my hand. The air box may only be plastic, but the drill bit is there for a reason hehe

Has given it a nice bark now - which oddly enough, is much the same sound I made, when I realised what a plonker I had been.

Does the K&N filter knacker the MAF? Did on my Subaru.

Just a open filter with a good cold air feed and shield will do ya.

Next step is a back box, but I would tend to do a cat back system with possibly a decat depending on whether ur car is an import or not.

PS. Those £400 Jackson racing jobbies, in reality how hard would it be to fabricate something similar for £50-100!?!?

Is that still being made?

What's the American one that is supposed to be the best exhaust for a '5?
I did see it linked on here, but can't remember what the manufacturer was called! Anyone have a link?

I think it's Borla. However when MX5Parts did there 10% discount and my original exhaust had only started blowing I decided to go for the single exit s/s option. Very happy with it, sounds great but I also have the silenced decat. Think it's a great combo. Loud and raspy on WOT and a deepish rumble at idle.

imo the best exhausts are made by Borla, Jackson Racing, FM and Racing Beat (which I have wink).

Can't be sure where I heard it from but heard somewhere that the MX5Parts s/s is of a similar construction/copy to the Racing Beat unit.

PS Think I saw your car at Goodwood on Sunday. Big turnout smile
