Chaps, I'm in the process of selling my RX7 and had an MX5 in mind for a while now, need to find out what all the fuss is about!

Anyway got an email from an importer I vaguely know through the RX7 scene, offering a deal on this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-Mazda-MX5-1-8-HKS-Turbo...

Now I'm not up on my MX5 knowledge, and this one has some obvious cosmetic issues, but what are peoples opinions on the value? Also, with forced induction MXs, what are the common issues to look out for? Bearing in mind my mechanical knowledge isn't too extensive, should I give this one a miss for the sake of my wallet?

I assume there are further supporting mods than those listed in the ad, and am waiting on some full details, but initial reactions from MX5 experts?

Thanks for any advice

I've heard it's something to do with tests that are required when the car clocks over 100k km's. No idea whether that's true or not.

that's basically the only mx5 i'd ever upgrade my bbr turbo for

it's a mk2 rs-ltd, japan only model and the only white mk2 i think. i'm not sure if this rs had the lightweight flywheel and any engine mods, but def the 6-speed box and torsen LSD are plus points. also all the mods are very nice both under the bonnet and the exterior mods. the only thing i'm unsure on is the HKS F con mini ECU, but if it's a proper ecu then you're onto a winner.

if i had the money, i'd def snap that one up.

I agree with Skinny. There aren't enough white Mk2s around and that one looks very nice. The mods look good to me too though I don't know anything about that HKS ecu either (ask on Nutz wink).

Great, my threads arrived!

I've been running round in car with a very similar spec, but fewer miles (27k) and hardtop. Mine was top end money, (legend is that it is an ex HKS demo car) so i think personally the white car may be slightly over priced?

IIRC HKS kit runs 0.4 bar standard which saw mine at just under 170 on the rollers. Felt quicker though.

Mine is a project, so ive fitted a few bits and pieces (dont want to ruin a further thread), but ive done a fair bit of digging around on the HKS F Con Mini.

Basically, its a piggyback but has VERY limited adjustability. I had real difficulty finding anyone who would map the HKS ECU's (something to do with software licence costs i think?) and when i finally did, its not that adjustable anyway. Its fine if you want to keep it as it is, but if you plan further upgrades the best place for it is the bin i believe...

p.s. This would make it look lovely!

Price feels a bit stiff if it's "only" 180bhp, but on the other hand it does look very, very nice. Love those wheels.

Looks rather cool! Just make sure you have the auction report and have a google for a translator for japanese auction reports as you'll need to know what the numbers mean. As it's modified it may only make Grade 3.5 but it looks good from the pics.
