as I ended up with an MX5.

Saw a local one advertised with "contact after 6:30" in the advert which had been placed at 1:00pm. Thought I would give them a quick ring on the dot, probably rubbish at the price, but phoned nd it asounded good...there by 7:00pm and bought it.

Now the proud owner of a 1995 UK 1.8 MX5. Bodywork is good, although it has previously been welded on the sills, 97k with FSH and a wad of receipts. New tyres all round, new rear brakes and a spare set of alloys. Needs a rocker cover gasket and it was sounding a bit tappy but I thought it was worth the risk. Will flush and change the oil and see how it goes. As an added bonus it also came with a hardtop (won't be needing that though!)

Pics to follow.

Paid £850 which I thought was a bargain. That's the main reason I rushed to have a look at it as it seemed very well priced (advertised at £1k). A few little spots of rust and the tappety noise but worse case (I really don't think it is this bad) is to slot another engine in. Probably do that for £400 or so and would still be a bargain IMO.

Thsi is my fifth MX5 and I keep coming back.

Don't think it has an LSD (I didn't check and have only driven it about 3 miles) so that may well be first on the shopping list along with a new exhaust (current backbox is only a year old but I had a twin exit MX5parts jobby on my last one and miss it).

Crikey, that's a bargain.

It'll still be a bargain if you have to buy a whole new engine hehe

I'm certainly pleased with what I payed.

However, I should say this is no concourse example. You can see the plate on the sills where it was welded and there is the odd bit of other rust but it certainly isn't a heap and looks superb from a few feet away (no peeling paint on the bumpers etc.)

But, and this is a big but, I just wanted one to enjoy and drive. I can't be bothered to clean and polish it all the time etc. I just wanted some summer fun. If it fails the next MOT (next Feb) I will sell the hardtop and weigh it in. If I end up losing £500 then its still a bargain for a summers fun. It would only last about an hour on coke and hookers!

Well said!

Yes, we all want to look after our cars - but as long as it goes and stops when requested, life is too short to spend it polishing IMO...

Pics as promised:

This was as she came. Haven't washed her or anything yet...first thing to do is a service with replacement CAS seal and rocker cover gasket. Hopefully that should stop the oil leak.

Doesn't look like theres much wrong with that!

What are the arches/boot like for rust?

Front arches and boot are perfect.

The rear sills have been welded in the past and there is a little bit coming on the rear arch (the four photo shows a little bit on the lip). Apart from that there are a few minute bubbles on the windscreen surround that should be easily treatable before it gets too bad. Also surface corrosion on the subframe but I may tackle that over winter (if I have moved to a place with a garage).
