Selling an MX-5
Discussion
Been trying to sell our Mk3 MX-5 for ages now due to the arrival of Baby Borris but had no interest at all, only really a couple of phone enquiries immediately haggling on the price without asking about the car or wanting to come see it.
Are they not selling well at the moment?
I'd post a link but not sure its allowed or not.

It must be overpriced then...
My mums 30k MY07 1.8 with recline-able hard top is worth 8-10k max i think...
im afraid your selling a "luxury" in these hard times, hence the prices of them...
Shoulda kept it in your pants
Baby Boris is gonna cost your more

I can't see why it's not selling, but there seems to be very few sold in the £9-10k range.

I recently sold my best other halfs '06 1.8i in immaculate condition, full history, leather A/C, low miles etc. Tried Autotrader and all i got was scammers. Tried E&M got nothing. Tried here and a couple of wasters initially. Eventually got lucky, again from PH, but ended up going for under £8k, still better than We Buy Any Car though! On the other hand sold a very specialist, much more expensive, car earlier in the year, again on PH and had several enquiries first day of advertising and the first viewer bought it for the asking price. Market's in a bit of turmoil I think. Mind you there are literally hundreds of MX5's to choose from. We bought a new one and got an amazing deal from a franchised dealer which would have been unheard of a year or so ago. Good luck with the sale, sadly from my experience you'll have to drop the price a fair bit.

Looks like a good enough advert to me.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1688969.htm

I have a theory. Most people buying a car for £10k-ish aren't buying it in cash, they're getting a loan from the bank. And if you're doing that, the cost of the finance means you're in pretty much the same ballpark as buying a new (or ex-demo) one from a dealer, with all the low-rate finance and warranty that comes with it.
Did some maths: £10k over 3 years at 8% is £313/month.
If you're doing a PCP over three years on a new car that's £16k with a GFV of £8k and finance at 5.9% (example from Mazda website) - That's £243/month.
Buying secondhand you have the value of the car at the end of it. Buying new you get the latest model and can choose precise spec and colour and so on.
Sorry to sound negative, but might explain why you're struggling to sell?
I don't think that is worth any more than £9k - I'm sorry!
I paid a not unsubstantial amount less than that for my '56 Sport last September - I know it had 45k miles on but still...
While the low mileage will attract some buyers, I reckon it would put off almost as many due to "under-use" etc.
Taking a quick look at Glass's guide, I reckon £8,750 would be about what you'd get as a part-ex, maybe a private sale would get you an extra £500.

I'm looking for exactly this spec & it doesn't seem like a bad price - but - there are loads of silver cars out there & I think some people are now saying "anything but silver" (we are & therefore have discounted all silver cars regardless of spec or colour).
I'd agree with that. Last car I got I was determined to find something other than a silver one.hornetrider said:
This is a symptom of Mazda's piss poor colour selections across the MX5 range imo. When I was buying I went for black because the other options were Grey, Silver, Stormy or flat red.
Black for me at least was the best of a bad bunch.
If you could have had any colour, from any car, what would you have gone for?Black for me at least was the best of a bad bunch.
Ha ha, that is a very good question!
The pearl white with red/black recaro combo on the JDM 20AE is stunning and would have got my cash. Failing that if I was feeling brave the sunlight yellow (I think) which is available in the states is a great colour, a little orange-y.
I think also I would like a good quality metallic/pearl black as Brilliant black is very flat and ultra high maintenance. I'm working on it hard when I can at the moment in order to get it looking good.
I think exterior colours need to work well in combination with interior colours tbh, and there is no choice on the interior. Stormy is a nice colour for example but I'm not a fan of it against black leather, I think more of a contrast is needed.
All this rambling is just my opinion though, and a bit of a thread derailment!
