A few weeks back I was about to buy a very nice MX5 but unfortunately the owner sold it the day before I got home (I work overseas 28 on 28 off).
I am home again next week and the hunt is on to find the right car, there is a 98 Berkley advertised at a dealer very close to home, and advertised here on Pistonheads, at £3,995 with 61,000 miles.

I know the Berkley doesn't have LSD which I would prefer, but that apart is it a good model and is the price about right ? I have seen another quite some distance away a little cheaper but not a whole load.

Also, as you guys are likely to know of cars which are selling at the moment are there any, preferably Scotland/North England which you would recommend ?

My budget is 4K but could stretch to 5 for the right car, equally if the right car was only 3K, even better.

I am looking for a car for general and track use, which is why I would like LSD.

Cheers
Murray

I'd say that was quite pricey for a mk1, even if it was the last model. There wasn't anything particularly special about the Berkeley, except that Mazda hunted through their store room to see what mk1 accessories they had left to get rid of before they started the mk2 production.

Do you have a preference between a mk1 or mk2, because with that budget you'd find a mk2.
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1742425.htm - A mk2 Icon, 6speed and TorSen LSD for just over £4k (I think it must have had a new hood because I'm sure the original was beige/tan).

no point spending that much on a berkeley if you're thinking about tracking it - 3k will get you a pretty nice mk1 with half bar, uprated suspension, decent brakes etc. 4k will get you a turbo or supercharged mk1 or a good mk2 probably with a few trick bits on too.

check out the nutz classified to see what you can get for your money.

Cheers Guys

My problem being I have only driven one MX5, it was a MkII, really liked it but don't really know much about them, though through reading here and MX5 owners club forum I am learning, seems a sorted MkI is probably what I need rather than a standard MkII.

I should probably discount that Berkley anyway.

Thanks

I've personally only had mk1's but believe the mk2 was less tail happy due to a wider track.

Bad thing in my opinion, if you're looking to track it.

As mentioned, s/c and turbo'd models are within reach, but make sure you adjust you maintenance and insurance budget accordingly.

OT but what has an LSD and what doesn't? Is it a case that all Mk2s have them or what?

I stay in Kilmarnock and work in Edinburgh. I travelled down to Berwick to see Steve at Goodwood Sportscars. He usually has three or four good clean cars at any one time. He also advertises on the main site with some of his cars.

I have no connection to him , but it is worth the trip down.

The Mk2 does have a wider track but only by 5mm and the tail-happiness is no different. The cars do feel a bit different but the basic handling is exactly the same wink
