Hi all,

I've used the search function but can't find anything quite like my problem...

To cut a long story short, my Mk1 has a coolant leak. I noticed whilst driving home yesterday when it overheated. Halfway home I refilled the coolant expansion tank with water and antifreeze, and overnight all coolant has gone from the tank and the radiator has emptied. I've refilled the radiator and noticed a drip under the car... The drip seems to be coming from behind the crank shaft pulley, so could it be a problem with the water pump, or is there anything else I can do to help diagnose the problem?

If it is the water pump, does anyone know a quick/simple/cheap fix (ie. Rad Weld) that'll let me limp it 40 miles to see Steve at 5speed?

Thanks,

Lunja.

Yep, sounds like the pump. A common failing. Wouldn't use radweld myself, fill it up, take spare water and make the 40 mile dash before it leaks out. Keep an eye on the temp and top it up if the temp climbs. If your timing belt is near due it's worth getting it done at the same time.

Agree with O&S. JUst keep the speed low and take it easy. Stop at regular intervals to top up the water. Don't let Radweld anywhere near your car unless you really do want to replace your rad too.

Thanks both for your help - seems it's just as I feared.

It would have to happen when the tax, MOT and service are due...

Thirded - same happened to me.

As said, top it up and go for it at a time when you won't have to sit in traffic. Take spare water and if it starts getting hot switch on the a/c (extra fan) and put the blower on full blast/hot to keep it as cool as possible.

Water pump shouldn't be too much.
