Hi guys,

Would like to take this chance to thank everyone on here who gave me some advice when I was looking to purchase my first MX-5. Well I have now done it and am very pleased with it thus far. (pictures to follow just waiting for some better weather.)

I have a slight problem in that the roof has a small tear behind the drivers side door which I guess is quite a common problem as I have seen a few similar tears. Only a small amount of water seems to come in which then collects behind the seat belt bolts. Am I right in thinking that this water drains away through the hole that is there? The only thing is I have had a very quick look under the car this morning and cannot see where it would drain out of?

Sorry just to clarify I was wondering where it drains out underneath the car.

Water drains out of the car from a few different places -

That particular drain hole is connected to a tube which runs all the way down and comes on in a void in front of the wheel arch, inboard of the sill area - you wont see it unless you get underneath, its like a little plastic tube sticking out of the metal work at a 45degree angle.

If water is collecting, IE 'backing up' then you need to clear the tube to get it to flow through.

There are also drain holes in the sills - at each end there is a reinforced section of the sill join (where the scissor jack fits, like most cars) either end of the 100mm-ish reinforced section is a 'joggle' in the metal that creates a little drain/breather hole into the sill area. This can get blocked up or as in the case of my car, get a bit mangle up where the cars been jacked up badly (kwik fit shoot ) and if they are totally blocked up the sills can fill with water. hence some people getting the sound of water sloshing about in the car!

Clear these 8 holes out with a bit of wire too, and you can check the condition of the inside of the sills by unscrewing the stainless kick panels and peeking in through the various holes with a torch.

I used (gently) a wire coat hanger to poke down the tube by the seatbelt mount. Doesn't clear it out as well as I'd like. But does help find the hole under the car.
