Hi Guys,
I am well on the way towards the rebuild of my Junkyard Eunos, new Autobox now in and connected.
Rear Spax fitted with strut brace, half rollcage etc.

Next on the list complete reassembly of engine, inlet manifold etc then rebuild front suspension & big brake kit.

However once its on the road I am keen to get more performance from it.

My concern is that it came from a scrapyard with no service history, although the engine seems ok and i have replaced all suspect parts, Is it worth tuning an engine, not knowing its history or better to get a freshly rebuilt one more capable of standing up to modification?

Any comments appreciated, including suggestions of engine mods worth doing..i.e S/C.
So far it has a K&N cone and the exhaust will be a free flowing replacement otherwise stock.
She has 85.000 on the clock.
Cheers
Doug

The best change I'd make to that is a proper gearbox. wink

Good engine or not, it's poor value for money tuning a naturally aspirated MX-5 engine.

To keep the junkyard theme going though, check out the mx5nutz forum, there are quite a few people who have fitted secondhand Mini Cooper superchargers to their MX-5s with good results.

If the engine goes pop, or otherwise isn't up for it, just sling another one in. They can be bought secondhand for under £500 (which is about what you'll pay for a good exhaust system for to try to eke out another 3 bhp from an NA MX-5 engine!).

Thanks for the Info.
In the past i have gone down the stage 2 head route etc but if its not worth doing for the performance gain, then a Cooper Supercharger's the way to go i think.
Maybe if money allows get a decent spare lump built up, just in case....

There is a guy on nutz (and on here I think) who sells second hand super / turbo charger kits occasionally....

Ok, sounds like a plan, if anyone could tell me who he is, ill watch out or contact him.
Might wait until the cars on the road first though, The pile of parts waiting to be fitted is large enough already and i keep falling over the old gearbox sitting in the walkway in the garage too..

Thanks I have emailed him and once its on the road ill get it booked it for sure.

The Eunos is my 2nd project vehicle after my Shortened Range rover pick up, fully caged etc.
that one took 4 years to get completed so the Eunos has plenty of time to be sorted.

I am keen for any advise on tuning etc, she is basically ok, but had been neglected, so working my way through replacing parts as i go.gearbox done now just prop & exhaust left to fit. then re-assemble engine, crank & cam oil seals, timing belt, water pump done.
Distributor block seal to do, new inlet manifold to fit as snapped off bolts for throttle linkage..(dont ask). then re-connect all pipes, wires etc and fit starter motor.which had to come out to change autobox.

then its re-build front suspension, fit spax & lowered springs, big brake kit and probably do the bushes whilst fitting thicker anti roll bars..
I work away all week on the London Olympics so only get weekends to get on with it, but watch this space. The car didnt cost much, but ive already spent more than its worth on parts..but thats not the point is it...lol.
