Managed to do this recently. Had opened the boot with the remote key fob, loaded boot, slammed shut before realising keys weren't in my pocket!

After about 30min of seeing if there was an easy way into the car or boot, gave up and broke back into my house to get the spare key. Is there any way of getting the boot unlocked once the key is inside of the boot, short of smashing a window to get to the cabin boot release?

Yes there is a way of getting into the boot without breaking anything. AA & RAC should know how to do it and I've seen it done (not on my car wink).

Yes, there is more than one way to get into the boot if you've locked it. I've done it myself.

As said - obviously not going to discuss it here though...

Oh and you say you had to break into your house -

this is why putting house keys and car keys together is lunacy, I cannot get my head round why most people do this!

If i didnt know another way (which isnt the same as the way that has previously been mentioned ie the way id do it can be done to most cars)

Id just smash the small window in the door, reach in and unlock the door then pop the boot using the remote release in the centre console.

If my doors are dead locked (which they usually are) then you would have to small both small wondows and pop the roof to get in..

I always deadlock my doors and my boot.

I think the deadlock on the boot (i.e. turn the key backwards in the lock to isolate it from the interior & remote boot release) is only on the Mk2+ as standard. I've heard that you can make the Mk1 work the same way by removing the boot lock barrel and filing off a notch but I don't have the details for this. I'm sure a Google will find the details (probably on Miata.net).

My early mk1 doesn't have anything in the way of remote boot releases, so if I'm away from home and I lock my keys in the boot accidentally, I'm stuffed. It's one of my worst nightmares hehe

Would anyone like to impart, via email, any useful information regarding the opening of one's boot in such circumstances? biggrin

I've learnt a drill to prevent it.
I always have my left hand in my pocket with the key in the pocket before closing the boot with my right hand. I never, ever close my boot any other way.

Cheers, I wasn't expecting anyone to give a step by step guide to how to break into an MX-5!

Was just curious if it was possible - I did ask a garage close by, they were confident they could get into a Mk1 but didn't think they'd manage a Mk2.5. Do the AA/RAC have ways into the more recent models too?

Indeed, will not be a mistake I'll be repeating!

I believe Mk1/2/2.5 are all the same.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but there are 3 simple ways around this...

One: Dont lock your keys in the boot

Two: There is a technique involving the number plate and a household tool

Three: Buy a remote boot cable popper from an NB and install it so you can release from the cockpit.

I had to learn all this the hard way being miles from home on a camping trip. In the end involved a crowbar, mallet and a very bent boot lid which had to be replaced.

if you have a mk1 and a zippy rear screen- its pretty easy to unzip the screen from the outside. this would remove the need to smash a window.
