HELP! Passenger electric window failed...
Discussion
...and it is down! And it supposed to rain here overnight.
Basically, any amount of pressing, hammering or stamping on the electric window button will not bring the window up.
Can anyone suggest ways of fixing it? There is no sound from the motor when I engage the button.
Is there a way of bring it up manually?

If the driver's side is still working then I believe this indicates that it's not a blown fuse issue.
You could try removing the switch from the centre console, removing the connections and cleaning the connections. If that doesn't fix it then you need to look at the motor.
There's a guide on mx5nutz re servicing/replacing the motor, but I can't access that site during office hours so can't link it.
In any event, it's a pretty involved job and I believe it's not cheap to replace the motor.
In the meantime, just tape a bin bag over the hole to keep the rain out. If you need to drive the car, try to find a clear bin bag to let you get the car to a garage and get it fixed properly!

Firstly to get the window up (and assuming it is not the switch or fuse), get someone to press the button up and then pull the window up. To aid grip a pair of rubber gloves may help.
Usually the motors do not fail (this is from personal experience and a trawl of the various mx5 forums) In many cases (including mine) it can either be the cables snapped or the guide wheels in the metal channel are not lubed/ free to move.
Try squirting some lithium grease in the guide rails (you will need to disassemble the door card and mind the horrible black sealant stuff on the plastic sheet inside)
Otherwise it is likely to be a snapped cable. Mine snapped inside the motor so wasn't immediately apparent. Strip down is fairly easy but putting in the cable is fiddly - best take some photos as you take it apart so you remember all the routing when put back together) All in, it took me about 1 hour 45mins - but there were several breaks in that time whilst I swore at the thing and hunted for info on the net!
I am sure there are some guides are Miata.net but they werent that clear.
Good luck
Mike

Just took the center console off, disassembled the switch assembly, and put it back together again, but no joy.
Interestingly though, when I press down on the switch and I can hear the motor engage (obviously nothing happens as the window is fully down) but when I press up, no motor sound whatsoever.
The feel of the up switch press is also different - it feels a lot looser than when I press down which makes me think there is something wrong with the switch.
Other than that, snapped cable?

Perhaps others can suggest whether it's possible to test whether the switch is working - multimeter on one of the wires perhaps?Interestingly though, when I press down on the switch and I can hear the motor engage (obviously nothing happens as the window is fully down) but when I press up, no motor sound whatsoever.

I eventually gave in trying to fix the switch and bought a new one for 50 notes http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...
Takes 5 minutes to fit and all your stress will be gone

The prongs on the bottom of the switches can snap off with excess force so that they no longer slide the microswitch on the pcb of the switch assembly, this was the problem on one side of mine, the other side had a snapped cable but this makes the glass drop into the door. New switch assembly 40 quid. Or dremel and superglue a new bottom prong onto broken prong ...time or money !
Got to love cars.
So this lunch I took the center console apart again to try and swap the switch over - hoorah! Pressing 'down' made the passenger window go up!
Was pleased with this as now I can at least keep the car dry and secure.
Give all the wires and contacts a good jiggle, scrape the s
t off the contacts.
Put the console back together again - idly check the windows again just in case and what do you know? They are both working again!

Cheers for all the help guys, invaluable as always.
