Ihave just bought a 1992 MK1 EUNOS from a lady who had owned it for 4 years, 94,000 on the clock , no rust , a few dings as expected .Test drove fine although the gear change seemed 'notchy'.
I have taken the car on a run of about 100 miles and have now noticed on slowing down in gear a distinct noise/whine which is getting worse, also on acceleration i have a distinct metallic whirring taking place.Clutch seems fine and engine is quiet and smooth.I am assuming the worst but as the car only cost me £1000 then i am prepared to change the box if needed, could it just be an oil issue ??
Advice needed please!!

Sounds similar to mine. Does the gear stick get hot? Changing the boots helps the gear change, and I still get the rasping noise - have a look at my project thread as I've taken loads of pics of the process....

Is worth checking oil levels in the diff and box for sure, but also remember that you may just be hearing the same noises you did on the test drive, but they may be amplified with the roof up for example, or are just becoming more obvious as the initial huge grin factor subsides.Well, it never subsides, but you know what I mean

The gearbox in my 92 Eunos is very noisy, mostly when coasting or engine braking. It sounds like somebody is pouring ball bearings down a metal pipe.

It's not exploded yet despite being well thrashed around over the past 2 or 3 years, and a replacement gearbox is only about £100 so I just fitted an twin exhaust and decat-pipe and ignore the other noises.

I spent ages researching it online and there seems to be no definitive answer as to what causes it, perhaps one of the shafts in the gearbox vibrating, maybe something to do with the alignment of the PPF following a clutch change, but no solid answer.

Loads of people seem to have the exact same problem, and nobody seems to have had the gearbox explode or any other problems.
