I am only a mild expert on Mk1's and have never actually searched for a Mk2, until now....

My mum wants one and has asked for my advice and to help her find one up to £5-6k.

Any pointers on good specifications to look for would be well received.

Anyone selling?

For that money she can get a very nice Mk2.5 Sport.

Is that a specific reg range? I.e. later cars?

Best spec in what respect?

Depends entirely on what she likes.

A 2.5 Sport will give you 6 speed, lsd, which are geared more towards performance.

Sports have a black interior, i have had many people comment on thr interior of my Montana which is much lighter with tan leather, and 1/2 the dash being tan as well.

Some special editions give you AC, some have heated seats, some come with a hard top- you need to decide what is important.

First ones were on a '51 plate in the UK I believe (until the end of the Mk2.5 run on a '55) although I did see an import on an 'X at a Handling day a few weeks back.

For day-to-day usability it would be my choice; heated leather is lovely. smile

Whats leather like if you leave the roof off? fking hot I'd imagine?

As said, 2.5's have different headlamps (Easiest way to tell) and were around "51" to "55".

MK2;

MK2.5;

The pictured 2.5 is a Sport.

I took it to mean "highest spec" in which case a Mk2.5 Sport will give you 6-speed, lsd, heated leather seats, electric windows & mirrors (heated mirrors from about 2003), fog-lights, additional chassis bracing, 16" alloys and I'm sure some other stuff I can't recall right now. A lot of Mk2.5 Sports have A/C too. Some special editions have some of that and some nice colours/interiors.

This.

I like the look of the MK2.5 lamps.

Although MK2 Lamps slightly modified look better wink

One can, but would need 2.5 Bumper too else there is a gap. Think that's all..

Make sure she test drives a Sport and an edition with standard suspension. The Sport has firmer Bilstein suspension and, at least in my experience, it does make a noticeable difference to the ride.

Once that decision is made it's just a case of working out what toys she wants - various different editions have LSDs, heated seats, aircon, leather seats, hardtops. There are some editions with a Bose stereo and additional speakers, but there are some comments on the internet that the Bose sounds worse than the standard stereo.

Some Mk2.5s have 16" wheels - replacement tyres are considerably more expensive compared to 15" wheels, something else to consider.

The 1.8 Euphonic in metallic red is a lovely looking car.
