ok, this spring thing. how important is it to get the lowered springs fitted to a new MX5. i have just bought one but not picked it up yet. i see so many storys of people getting the dealers to fit the springs and not do a very good job. lots of people say get the dealer to fit them then go to an indipendant tracking place to get the job set up proply. as i never will see a race track as i just bought it for a sunday fine weather toy, is it worth the bother, will i notice any differance enough to warrant the cost.

Just considering the issue myself. Since my old springs are so bouncy I nearly managed to flip the bugger at the weekend then I would say yes.

For reference, my local suspension place reckons on about £100 labour to fit a spring set. With the eBay springs at c.£170 then it's a cheap mod.

If you get a spring compressor from halfords (couple of quid) it's not really a big job to undertake yourself. Not sure how a garage can possibly mess it up when most people can do it DIY in a couple of hours taking it slowly!

Personally though, I'd just get a set of the eBay coilovers that are selling for between £130-150 if you're just having it as a weekend toy and not a track day car. From the reviews over at Nutz they seem comfortable for use daily and you can go as low as you like on them, less hassle to fit than springs just bolt them on!

My suggestion.

Drive it. If it puts a smile on your face and you're having fun. Well do nothing. If you don't think it's good enough, then do the springs.

.....makes a big difference to the feel & handling of the car

- but check with your insurance company - it's a mod! Some don't mind, some do & some will want it fitted by a Mazda dealer etc etc

Just a tip. After a bit of research I bought the Rokkor suspension set which seems to have a good write up. It's £180 approx on Ebay.co.uk however if you order it via Ebay.fr it's £135 including shipping from Belgium- As the UK one would be..

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Springs arrived from Belgium on Monday. Got them fitted and a full geometry set up (Using the WiM fast road setup) at ProTyre in Bristol today for a shade over £200.

I haven't had a chance to have a proper hoon yet, however the difference is remarkable. The car sits much lower now, looks great. I know it's much lower because it is a bugger to get into! Whilst before there was lots of squirming on corners, now it is completely flat, even when I'm really trying to provoke it.

So that brings my total spend on the MX5 to nearly a grand... Bargain.

Next mod is tyres, but have a lot of tread on these ones to "use" first wink

Looking forward to the Haynes trackday on Sunday now! biggrin

Dont want to rain on your parade, but what happens when you take it on a nice bumpy B-road?

The last time I followed a lowered '5 on such a road, I was sitting behind a shower of sparks, and when we swapped places, he was nowhere to be seen as he couldn't keep up.

Meh, it's not "slammed" and the springs are adjustable, so if necessary I will do just that. Went over a couple of speedbumps fairly quick with no problems though.

Had the wife's new MX-5 sport lowered using Eibach springs, these drop it around 30mm, purely subjectively it transformed the car which always felt on tippy toes before, only slight downside is the increased tendency for it to bottom over speed bumps etc. Predictably wifey didn't notice any difference.

Don't compare a lowered Mk3 to a lowered Mk1/2/2.5, they are very different cars. The Mk3 as delivered is over-tall as it has "UK" springs fitted to comply with UK pedestrian safety rules. The Eibach "lowering" springs only correct the ride height to where it was designed to be wink

Indeed, although they do offer options to go even lower should you wish to wear out your floorpan and bump stops.
