Mazda MX5 10th Anniversary Edition
Discussion
Hi all,
I am interested in a Mazda MX5 10th Anniversary Edition.

Does anyone know about the 6 speed gearbox? As a normal around the town driver, would I ever need it? Are there any issues with it, i.e. reknowned faults?
Any opinions greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jim

The 6-speed is stronger than the 5-speed and as it doesn't need turret oil is less fussy about the shift-boots too. Personally I think the 5-speed has a slightly sweeter shift but there is very little in it and both are superb.
As far as I know, 6-speeds are always matched to a Torsen LSD too

My wife bought herself a 10AE (half the miles than that but more money) in July and its been fine.I extensively researched the MX5 market for her and advised that the 10AE had the best spec for the money.
She loves the car and I've found its grown on me. 6 speed box has a narrow gate but its OK once you get used to it. Its a very close ratio box and 1st is very low, Sue has had to get used to that because its gearing is very different to her Saab 9-5.
You need a good look at all the MX5 body issues- sills and wheel arches, but otherwise they seem pretty reliable cars. Mechanically very straightforward

I have a 30k mile 10AE. The box is great - very slick but it is close ratio so 6th is really 5th, if you get what I mean. It isn't a cruising gear like the 6th in my old Primera.
As others have said, the wheels do corrode but I've kept mine on because I want to keep the car looking original. The 10AE also has the LSD, front strut brace and uprated suspension.
Apart from that, it is standard MX5 ie very reliable.
Let me know if you need more info.
