Mk 2.5 Winter Tyres ?

Girlfriend's MX5 needs tyres replacing sharpish, and i was probably going to put a set of winter tyres on. When getting quotes however, the tyre people act like i'm going mad- asking if we're taking the car to the Alps or something... Am i being over-cautious? Secondly, assuming i am correct in doing so, would people recommend a second set of steelies too (car currently runs 15" alloys, shod with 195x50x15 tyres)? - and if so, any recommendations for suitable steel wheel size?
