Well having fitted the roll bar on Saturday my son and I took the MX5 to a sprint. We were entered in the Fisher Fury but it wasn't ready so we got the entry changed.

The car is standard (Trilogy) apart from the bar and is really not fast enough, it is also too soft, we finished 9th and 10th of ten in class, against Lotus 2-11, VX turbo, Exige, MR2 turbo, Ginetta G4 etc.
Sounds like a not very successful day, but we both enjoyed ourselves more than I can describe, OK it was not competitive, but such fun to drive on the limit.

I think it will remain a road car with maybe a track excursion or two if the Fury is under repair again. Though a turbo, lowered and firmed up a bit and who knows ! ;-)

Sounds like you had a blast, out of interest what was the event you were at and how much does it cost? Wouldn't mind have stab at one at some point.

It was the Boyndie Sprint, organised by Aberdeen and District Motor Club, entry for these sprints is typically £65-£70 per day, you also need a MSA non-race licence (£32).

I have been doing sprints and hillclimbs for a few years now, got to be one of the cheapest ways into motorsport. As it was a road car the MX5 didn't even need a roll bar, though I would be reluctant to go on track without one, the reason the Fury was not ready is it is still being rebuilt after a roll at a hillclimb.

Aberdeen's a little far for me, but I like the sound of that and might see if there's something closer to home. Cheers!

A bit late in the season now but look out for events starting around April next year, there are sprints/hillclimbs all over the country.

I have found the fellow competitors to be very fiendly and helpful, give it a go, you won't regret it.

Hee hee - glad you took it to Boyndie. They are great cars on the limit and with more power (eg FI), could scare a standard Elise but TBH, it's never going to be competitive in A8 with developed Lotus based cars. When I was sprinting mine, I did take a few scalps (Elises, TVRs) but it was normally through luck.

On a side note, I hear the VX beat the 2-11 :-)

I enjoyed it more than I would have imagined, I have a competitive nature and knowingly going out in a car that has no chance of being on the pace is something I didn't think I would do, never mind enjoy.

As for your side note, yes the Vauxhall beat the Lotus biggrin
