What is this on the boot?

Hi Guys,

I've been to view a few mk1's recently, and the later models (97/98) all seem to have this strange silver thing on the boot:



I'm guessing it's for some kind of luggage storage, but it looks gash? Any way of removing it or will it leave holes in the boot?

It's really putting me off some otherwise nice looking mk1s!

Luggage Rack

Some clamp on at the sides of the lid - thus no mounting holes - but that will certainly leave 'em

Those racks are quite useful & popular actualy. If not to your taste just post up on a few MX5 forums that you want to swap the boot lid with one without a rack & Bobs your Monkhouse as they say

I think they look better on a dark colour. I had one on my old Berkeley and I thought that was a lovely car! I think they were fitted to a lot of late Mk1s to get rid of the old stock as they won't fit a Mk2.

These are great, so useful, I had my 4x12 guitar speaker cab (that's big!) lashed across the back of my 5 at the weekend!
I like it so much,I hunted down a matching BRG bootlid with one of these fitted, & drove 120 miles to pick it up.

IMHO much lower profile & nicer that fitting a great clunky aftermarket jobbie!

Not as practical though as the weight limit is only something like 20Kg and they aren't flat i.e. the middle 2 runners are slightly higher than the outer 2. I do like them though

I think the limit is 22kg on the rack, personally I wouldn't want to put more on it, suits me fine
