Can anyone explain chassis and wheel alignment to me in layman terms? What exactly gets done? I always thought that wheel alignment was simply adjusting the tracking! confused

hi there
yeah your right wheel alignment is another term for tracking, all they do is adjust the length of your steering rack ends to point your wheels out wards or inwards depending on vehicle manufacturer setting.
hope this is leyland terms enough lol

WRONG - VERY WRONG!!!!

Tracking is only one element of chassis alignment. MX5s are basically adjustable in 3 ways at the front and 2 at the rear.

Front: Toe (which you are calling tracking), Camber (leaning in at the top) and Caster (how far forwards ahead of vertical wheels are - thing of shopping trolley casters only they are pushed forwards instead of trailing behind).
Rear: Toe and Camber.

All these elements have to be taken together to get the right geometry. Just getting front tracking done is not likely to fix anything and usually just makes things worse as the other elements aren't taken into consiferation.

On top of that, the front & rear wheels have to be adjusted in relation to each other otherwise while the front & rear wheels might be adjusted correctly in isolation, they might not actually be pointing the same direction!

There are other considerations that a decent technician will take into account but it all goes way above my head laugh
