Is it a case of pulling a fuse, or are the main dealers for my baby sis right in saying "can't be done"?

Seems unlikely that there would be a separate fuse for each airbag.

Under the pax seat there is a connector. Disconnecting this will disable the air-bag. Not sure how happy insurance would be with this though.
The correct way would be to use a Mazda child seat that has the transponder that disables the air-bag but they haven't sold them for years and they are like hens teeth 2nd hand.

There are also modules you can plug in that allow you to turn the airbag on and off but I'm pretty sure these aren't strictly legal.

ETA: Euphoria? Shouldn't that be Euphonic?

They come up on eBay now and again - and I think the device works independently of the child seat, i.e you can just tuck it into whatever seat you already have. IIRC Mercedes used to offer the same system. .

I guess the concept fell out of favour once switchable airbags became commonplace.

Edit: there's at least one on eBay now, item number: 260686873666

I realise that this is an old post, but it might help someone searching... If you use a Mercedes baby seat then the airbag will be disabled too. Mazda licensed the technology from Mercedes and their seats will disable the system on an MX-5.
