my car battery was working perfectly, but last night i thought that i would trickle charge it through the cigarette lighter socket as i had not used the car for about 2 weeks
to do this i had to turn the ignition key to posn 1

this morning the battery would not turn the starter motor over

i am currently trickle charging it by connecting crockdile clips directly to the battery terminals

-what are the chances of reviving the battery?

-if trickle charging fails, but the car can be jumpstarted, can the battery be kept going by giving it a good drive for 1/2 an hour, or do you think that it will have been damaged such that it will no longer hold the charge for any period of time
any suggestions as to what else to do, other than get a new battery

-finally, if i have to get a new battery, do you have any brand and supplier recommendations

You MIGHT revive the battery if your lucky. I'd jump start it then go for a longish drive with minimum load (up the motorway Witt everything off) for half hour at least.

Leave it a few hours, see if it restarts. Leave it a day see if it starts.

However, if it's borked (which i'n guessing it is) then the one to go for I'd the Westco sealed battery. Specific design for the mx5, vents through tubes, loads of cranking power. Mx5parts have then.

Made the me mistake on mine when it was sroned. Totally flat after trying to charge through the lighter. Left it charging connected to the battery and it has been fine since. Good luck!

If it's the original Panasonic gel battery then it will take more than a 1/2 hour drive to charge it up. They need a full 24 hour trickle charge to get back to full charge. If it's dead then the Westco from MX5 Parts is the best replacement.

as advised, i trickle charged it for over 24 hours , and it started up first time
i have driven it about 100 miles today, and have had to restart it after scheduled stops about 5 times

so far it has performed faultlessly
i hope that there has been no lasting damage to the battery by this discharge episode

please do not try to trickle charge your mk1 battery through the lighter socket
