Pick it up on Friday - great deal and yet to see it, let alone drive it!!

UK car, 1.8S (S?) with 6 month old mohair hood and full service history . Same owner for last 8 years

PX at a MaZda dealer against a new MX5

120k miles and a UK car

Fancied a cheap project car and after watching many EBay sheds, I think I've struck very lucky!!

Driver's seat has 2" split and some cosmetics to sort, but above all it seems to be a clean and original car, ready for me to tweak and play with!

Cheers
Nick

It's an airbag steering wheel. You can replace it with another airbag wheel (v. expensive) or with a non-airbag wheel (not sure on the legal/insurance implications of this) but I wouldn't bother.

Thanks guys!

Initial plans are to strip out the wheel arch liners, soak the arches and underside in some degreaser and steam clean it all!

Will use my trusty steam cleaner to do the carpets and seats too.

Then up onto axle stands and have a good crawl around underneath it to get to know it better.

Need to get that seat repaired and I'll change al of the oils in engine, box and diff - are Opie oils best source and does a good 10/50 synthetic oil reduce the oil consumption in these engines?

Did the 1.8S have an LSD, or was that only the Jap market cars?

So many questions and so little time!

Will be improving things over thge next 12 months or so, fast road/track geometry is first on the list and then a second set of rims with stickier rubber for some trackday fun.

For 'box & dif' I'd recommend Redline or Opie full synthetic and for the engine again use a full synthetic. I always use Mobil1 0W-40. Is there a reason you are worried about oil consumption? They don't usually use much if any.

I believe the UK 1.8S did have LSD.

Take a look at MX5 Parts and wave goodbye to your cash wink

Not on the MK1 unfortunately. MK2 yes. The UK spec MK1 came with an open diff.

Also I suspect the sills have been repaired, the bottom 3/4 of my sills were painted black as standard, only after I had the sills fixed the cheaper option was just to spray the sills the same colour as the body. Not as such a bad thing. So long as the job was done well.

That's where mine is sitting right now thumbup

(don't worry, it's not balancing on milk crates! laugh They're supporting removed callipers

I'm currently doing the Dinitrol Treatment: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and you should maybe think about doing that whilst you're at it. If you have indeed got a good one (you'll find out how to see in that thread), then it's well worth keeping it good! yes

Good to see that I'm not alone in my fear/hatred of the old iron oxide?!!

I have some Dinitrol rust killer from when I had my 944 Turbo (much missed!) which was great to apply, although I did manage to coat part of me with it too...!

One last quick question, best comopanies for limited mileage insurance policies for the 5?

Many thanks

Thanks, already looked at the MX% Parts site...!

I went down a very slippery modding slope with an old 944 Turbo I had, so I'm determined to keep this to a sensible budget...!!

Yeah right!!

As far as oil consumption goes, I had read that 1.8s tend to use more oil with mileage than the 1.6s?

No, I'm not too keen on the bulky wheel either tbh, but the immediate priority is how it drives, so geometry etc will come before a new wheel!

Adrian Flux worked out ok for me, but there's always such a mix of circumstances, requirements and experiences with all of them though!

There is apparently an invoice for repair work to the sills - I thought that they were all body colour below the door line though, missed that!

It passed an MOT last November, so they must be in reasonable nick.

I'll be getting it up on a ramp on Saturday to have a good old poke around

Just had a quote from them of £329!

Seems a bit steep for 4000 miles pa, fully comp and I'm an old codger of 44 yrs!

Any other good experiences?
