Drilling the airbox

Worth it or not?
I quite fancy a little extra induction roar but certainly not at the expense of boominess, loss of power of any other negative!
Last thing I want to do is drill a bunch of holes in a perfectly good box and find out it was a bad idea.

You can always duct tape over them again. Start with a couple of small ones on the COLD side and see how you get on. I quite fancy a little extra induction roar but certainly not at the expense of boominess, loss of power of any other negative!

It is only loud when at WOT not when cruising.

What does 'WOT' stand for? when on throttle?
How does it sound compared to a typical K&N 57i kit that I used to have back in t'day?
A few thoughts I scribbled the other day regarding air filters etc:

I trawled through loads of threads on this last night. Looked at pretty much the whole array - drilled boxes, panel filters, cones, cones with shields, cold air ducting from rad opening to cone, ram induction from beneath the windscreen and have reached the conclusion that unless you're going for a proper, purpose built system such as ARC or Jackson Racing Cold Air Intake, then all other, lets say, cheaper solutions, will be compromised in some way
From there, I think it's purely down to you whether a trade off between sucking warm air from the engine bay is worth the addition noise of a £75 pipercross / K&N type cone, or indeed whether drawing that same warm air from the bay via a drilled box is worth the deeper growl under acceleration...
I've swayed this way and that and have kinda decided that it'll stay standard

Do it you pikey.

You can call me an Irish c*nt but don't call me a pikey

In all honesty, it's worth it. I even read a test one time some American magazine was doing with all different air filters and standard with holes & panel filter was their recommendation.

Will sound as good as a cone, with the benefit of some heat shielding provided you only drill the cold side.
Means you'll need a new airbox if you change your mind though.
I used a 12mn corebit
No it won't. I had a JRCAI on my old '5 which had an awesome induction noise, my new one has a drilled airbox and it is barely perceptible.Means you'll need a new airbox if you change your mind though.
