Are they good?

I quite like them, rev well and stuff but I find it's quite a noisy engine. Anyone else?

It's noisy on start up, noisy at speed, noisy on idle.. It just doesn't seem a very smooth engine.

Or maybe it's just mine..

Noisy? Well, I have a V70 which is much quieter. But is it the engine or the soundproofing? Not much soundproofing in an MX-5. Don't find mine rough though, just, er, vibrant. smile

They are noisy, though with a stock exhaust and intake they're a bit quieter, refined they're not. I wouldn't say they rev well either, my Honda revved well.

They are pretty tough though so it's swings and roundabouts.

my turbo seems pretty smooth. but the project car with no stereo, interior surrounds or gearstick gaitors sounds rough as nails!

I just think when I'm not listening to the exhaust noise, the engine just sounds pretty nasty. When I get near my road I just stick it in neutral (I live on a hill, but turn around at the bottom) so its not too loud and the noise bouncing back off the cars isn't nice.

No, your right. There not actually very 'nice' engines. They are strong, tough, hardy, and very tolerant of being thraped.

But their not smooth, or particularly refined. The engine in my Gti-6, for instance, which was based on basic design not all that much more modern, was so much better. Ford Zetecs also, much better. But then, I'm not sure you could double the power output of either of those engines simply by strapping on your particular favourite flavour of turbo without even having to lift the camcover. Its a price you pay.

Not loud enough IMHO. I can't hear it over the AC/DC on the stereo. Personally I love driving past stone walls or under bridges and getting the engine/exhaust noise reflected back at me, I turn the stereo down for that.

Oh no, exhaust noise is lovely.. I do the same.

I'm talking about actual engine noise.

It's not the best sounding engine no. It's not like a Honda VTEC type engine. But it does the job well enough and lasts.

They are quite rough and raspy sounding, but thats part of the charm. They're as tough as nails and love to be hammered, so I'll trade off refinment and whisper quiet power delivery for that. The engine is a real masterstroke IMO, they're very simple and effective units.

And there is me thinking that we have two cars with a problemlaugh
Instead I find mine and hers are normalrofl
I have yet to start the turbo one up, but expect it to be noisy but fast.
All the ones we have looked at were tappety too.
Just like a crossflow Ford tough and reliable but loud.

I don't think my engine sounds particularly harsh or noisy. The "other one" is a standard Uk car. Both 1.8 NBs. It isnt the most refined but I wouldnt descrive that as particularly noisy either!

However, the NA'S I've been out in certainly sound a bit rougher.

NA's are hard work, noisey and not overly revvy.
but the seem to love being caned, and even after 150k's mines yet to use any water/oil.

They are a fantastically responsive engine... Way more so than my old type Rs. Noisy yes, but a great engine (1.8).

I bought a new centre pipe and back box from Euro Car Parts last week via an indie garage and paid £90. The engine is an awful lot quieter now, most of the noise was coming from the exhaust which was well past its best but seemed fine on inspection and went through previous MOT's. Easily the most satisfying way I've spent £90 in a while and in my opinion the car sounds so much nicer as a result, with no more rough rasping noises as you accelerate.

You get usable torque for just cruising along, although you have to rev the engines fairly high to get the most from them, at which point they do sound a bit growly. This said, even with a chavvy air filter on mine, it isn't unbearable by any stretch and the tyre and road noise will have already have been getting on my nerves long before the engine noise and vibes do.
