I think there's very little difference:
Re engine - the 3.5 engine may have slightly diff components or use slightly different materials for some components but I don't think the mk3 engine has any significant failings (it's a very solid, reliable little engine)
Re suspension - on the 2.0 Sport model (which is the one to get) - both Mk3 & Mk 3.5 have Billstein suspension fitted as standard straight from the factory and both can have Eibach lowering springs fitted to improve handling (which is how they are designed to be set up) - but they have to be imported with standard springs because of some rubbish EU ruling about bumper height for pedestrian safety etc etc (- it's only about £300 to change them)
