I'm starting to weigh up my options for where I want to go car-wise next (I'm test-driving a 986 Boxster today), and supercharging my '5 could be an option. I'm just looking for some info on how much, where to get stuff from and who to do the work!
I'm not interested in pushing huge power, I would have thought around 180-200bhp would be more than enough.
Any advice chaps? smile

£3995 if you're handy with a spanner IIRC

That is a great setup from a very knowledgeable bloke.

I thought Phil was busy sorting out the suspension and other development bits. Is he doing installations again?

Not sure to be honest. In my MX5 days I spoke to Phil a few times and he was always looking to expand on the FI stuff.

If you email him you get an autoreply stating his moving away from FI and concentrating on suspension.

Matt's kit as linked to above will make your car silly fast, if you can afford it, get it!

Thanks for the links all.
I'm seriously thinking about the kit on MX-5 nutz.

I wonder whether I am capable of fitting it?!

you can do most of it with a 17mm spanner, does that help?

It's really very easy to fit, definately not rocket science.

270-280!! That is a serious bit of power in such a small and light car.. must be mental fun biggrin

If I start putting away £100 a month now.... bks it will be a long time before I can afford to do that biggrin

Thanks, I'd like to fit myself if only to save some cash.
I need to get a reasonable insurance quote and then I think I will need to do it!

I'm not sure I'll be running 275bhp initially though...!

You'll need to source some smaller crank pulleys then. It's the mecanical link between the blower and the engine which determines how much power you make, (well that's a bit simplistic, but it'll do for now).

Alternatively a fellow moderator on Nutz is selling his MP62 kit,

http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6...

It's a fair bit cheaper, though you'll need to source your own fuelling/timing adjustment solution, but with the crank and charger pulley sizes he's selling you can get away with a Powercard, (and I think Craig as a bracket to allow you to manually retard the base timing on a MK2). That's what that kit was origionally running on.

^^ I've seen that kit, it looks rather good.
I think I'm probably better off buying the moss kit and then upgrading when I feel like more power.
I didn't realise I'd need to source anything extra with that kit on nutz, although I hadn't looked too closely at was and wasn't included.

Like I said, I'm not sure I'd want the sort of power that kit is likely to give anyway! 146bhp to ~275bhp may be a bit too much of a leap!
190-200bhp would be ideal to start with I reckon, I can't see it being likely that I'd want to go more than 220ish anyway...

No such thing as too much power Luke wink

Just don't foot your foot down as hard... try putting a wooden block under the go pedal if you're that worried hehe

Partly worried about killing myself with that much power and a bit worried about reliability. I know they're strong engines but almost doubling the power.... Hmmm...!
Being a daily car reliability is a bit more important to me than chasing big power numbers!
I've emailed the bloke with the 275bhp kit and chatting about options at the moment. wink

You'll also need a built engine for 275BHP, standard pistons and conrods will not be lasting very long at that kind of power figure!

200BHP will certainly not feel tardy.

Laz is running his 250bhp on stock internals I'm sure... although 275bhp is a fair whack more than that.

275bhp is unlikely to kill a well tuned supercharged MX5 as they tend to have less torque than with a turbo - probably around 230lb/ft. That would be pushing it a bit though so you'd want it professionally dyno-tuned with a full stand-alone ecu.
