Trying to justify an MX-5 as a weekend toy, but I'd need to be able to carry two bikes every so often.

Anyone care to share their bike carrying solutions with me (Photos would be appreciated). By the way both seats will be full when this needs to be done.

ETA: I'm talking about a MK1 here.

You can get a tow bar for the MK1 use this and a towbar mounted carrier.I have both and have never quite got round to using them but will.

I have carried two bikes on the back of my mk1 mr2 many years ago. So it should be possible on the mx5. From memory my only concern was the bikes were wider than the car. Not sure how legal it was?

We've carried 2 bikes on the back of our MX5s using the Saris Bones carrier. I know some people don't rate them but it's been ok for us.

Same - perfect solution for the car.

Here OP

Not the best angle as it makes it look lopsided but it's not. The back wheel hangs out by about 4" (less than the door mirrors), and even if the front one is left on the bike it doesn't stick out past the bodywork if you turn it slightly, although it does obscure the light cluster a bit. I had no passenger that day so the bike wheel is on the rear shelf but it could be tied to the carrier easily enough.
If you really wanted to obey the letter of the law you could slap another numberplate on top of the bike, but I've done hundreds of miles like that and not been pulled (that said, the legs are actually positioned so that you can read the numberplate fully if you're directly behind).

Best bike carrier I've ever used. cool

I have a brilliant double bike rack and tow bar for a MK 1 MX 5. It's still on the car but I would sell it if someone wants to make me an offer

I use a bike rack on my Mk2 MX5, It's just a cheap carrier, I sit one of the bars on the rear bumper at the other on top of the boot. The two top straps slot over the top edge of the boot, and the lower two straps go through the two tow-hooks beneath the bumper.

The bikes end up mounted quite high on the car which is good as it doesn't obscure the number plate.

I understand this wont be of much help as you said you need both seats but I was quite proud of this so I'm posting it. Got some funny looks at the drive through on the way back lol.
