Hello all,

I went for a little hoon this afternoon, and then stopped off at a friend. On the way back from my friend I noticed a really bad sound coming from somewhere. It only happens at certains revs, 1900rpm 2300rpm 3000rpm (ish), it happens in any gear, even neutral. It sounds a little like plastic rubbing together, or perhaps metal, I'm not sure. I noticed no decernable drop in power, everything appeared to be okay. The water temp and oil pressure were both fine (according to the gauges).

Here is a youtube video of the sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0jO6UcfoJU

The sound happens in the video at about 10s when I start revving the car and a few times after that. Does anyone know what it is? I'm fearing the worst here that it's some kind of valve problem.

Please say it ain't so.

The chances your engine is 'dying' are very very slim, they dont really do that.

Its really hard to tell from a video but that just sounds like a vibration, a bit of heatshield or something. Get your head poked in all round the tunnel and underneath, you'll track it down.

I get something similar like that to but can only hear it at about 2k revs when my head is in the engine bay then the sound of engine drowns it out or it goes away

only time i hear it when driving is when on engine brake or when say I'm in 4th gear and under 2k revs and you accelerate, its done it for over a year now and no problems and still pulls strongly for a 1.6. But i hardly drive mine compared to others 3-4k per year or less.

I think I found the problem, it is the heatshield on the downpipe that has suddenly started rattling extremely loudly. I got the OH to rev while I held a hammer against various pieces until it stopped. I'm going to get some jubilee clips at some point and put them in various places on the downpipe which should fix it.

In my 1.8 (10AE) I get a similar sound to that between 2k to 2.3k revs, doesn't matter about the gear. Not sure what it is.

If it sounds like my video and happens at specific revs it's probably the heatshield on either the manifold, downpipe or cat.

Unless there are some attached to the body then my heatshields are long gone

Mine sounds like it comes from the intake manifold area somewhere, I'll live with it for now and let you know when my intake manifold falls out the bottom of the engine bay driving along eek

Funnily enough I'm getting this on mine too. It comes in at near as damnit 3k RPM and stops soon as you pass or drop back below that.
