I think I can already guess the answer but would a 2005-2006 plate MX5 be type-approved for a towbar? I have a suspicion my dad has been bitten by the Mx5 bug having got mine (hah!) but he very occasionally needs to tow a light unbraked single motorbike trailer.

Yes you could legally fit a tow-bar. Whether you could legally use one on the road depends on whether it has a maximum tow weight rating. What does it say in the handbook?

If it's the NC I don't think it's approved for towing.

If it says on the reg doc that the towing weight is 0kg then you will invalidate the insurance if you tow anything wink

It's possible with JDM cars is a towing weight has been added to the reg docs and it might be ok on earlier uk cars but definitely not on Mk2+.

Mk.1 can tow, Mk2 and 2.5 cannot (or at lest officially). Not sure about the NC.

I'm pretty sure that my NC2 manual states bluntly that the mx-5 is not to be used for towing so don't even try it.

From the NC Ownner's Manual
"The Mazda MX-5 is not designed for towing. Never tow a trailer with your Mazda MX-5.

And NB chassis is exactly the same as NA chassis with a bit of strengthening added.

The only type of tow bar you can fit to the Mk 2 roadster is a hitch bar from state side which will take a bit of work to fit ,(as the tie down eyes(baby teeth) which can be unbolted on the Mk 1 are welded on to the Mk 2) and turn into a tow bar for the UK with a ball to use and electrics, but as has been said the Mk 2's where never issued with a towing weight for this country so you legally can not use the Mk 2 for towing a small trailer, if you do convert a hitch bar to use, your insurance will be void.
But it is not impossable to do wink
Keep an eye on the club rallies, you may just of seen a Mk 2 & Mk 1 that as one fitted and being used full of rare parts for sale whistle
The UK Mk 1's are OK to tow with, but you must check you V5 for the imported Mk 1's, and you must inform your insurance Co that you have one fitted for use.
