Hi, just taken delivery of my new NC3,5 Miyako. It's a 1,8.

A girl I work with had a 1.8 03 plate NB.

She likes cars and knows I am into them but I am new to the MX5 world and don't know much.

Do our cars have the same engine? Do they have timing chains or belts? Apart from the body, what are the main mechanical differences between the two?

Cheers. Dan.

As far as I'm aware the NB and NC are completely different cars and, bar the name, don't have anything in common.

Cheers for that. So what's the history of my 1.8 engine? It looks quite old school.

Yes I noticed that when the two were spread alongside each other.

They do have one thing in common. The side indicators. Nothing else was carried over from the NB smile ETA: Damn, beaten to it again! I need to get a bit quicker on the keyboard!!!

Not sure what engine the 1.8 NC has. I've always assumed that it's not based on the NB 1.8 but I don't really know. NC 2.0 has a timing chain and NB 1.8 has timing belt. No idea about NC 1.8. I'm sure you could find out by looking in the service manual though - does it have a service interval for cam belt or timing chain damper replacement?

Wikipedia leads me to the Mazda L engine using the pages below. Introduced in 2001 so not the same as the 1.8 in the older models.

Chain driven smile

Nothing in common between them other than the name to be honest.

As above, it uses the L engine.
