Evening All

Some of you may have seen my thread in readers cars, if not then here is a gratuitous picture of my now 9 day old purchase.

Before I do that, I have two questions that I need help with.

Firstly, the front discs have an odd colouring to them, the car had been standing for a while, and I think it just needs an Italian tune up/time to clear up, what are your thoughts?

Secondly, I have found two connectors in the driver foot-well, which are now tucked behind some trim piece. One of them looks like a small jack, with one connection ring, whereas a 3.5mm has two. The other is a green connector, that's about all I know. The previous owner had removed the old stereo for a double-din head unit (now gone for the standard part), any cables to do with his install? I haven't found anything to not work, but I'm curious as to what I may be missing out on!

Now for pictures!

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer to a new 5'er.

Are those ridges all over the discs?

The backs are smooth, compared to those I can feel ridges, but only just, less than half a millimetre in height.

Connectors look like the remnants of an in-car phone kit to me - 3.5mm jack with single connection will be the microphone - can you see one anywhwere?

ETA the pitted discs - in my experience you get this on lightly used cars, I would bet theres probably rock hard cheap motor-factor brake pads in there too.

I'd try some 'italian tune up' but if it doesnt improve significantly I'd stick a set of discs and pads in there - its really not expensive at all, and mx5parts have 10% off at the moment too

Will attempt an Italian tune up later/tomorrow and report back.

If and when I want to order new front brakes. Being a mk2.5 1.8, from mx5 parts, I would want the big brakes? And get genuine Mazda, oem equal or ebc normal? And same questions for pads.

Sorry for being a noob!

Will look for a microphone, sounds plausable with his trickster head unit.

I'm not sure if your particular model has the 'sport' brakes or not? Some do, some don't.

Look it up, or measure your discs. If not the sport brakes, then they are the same as the Mk1 and Mk2 1.8 brakes.

Go for pattern part discs, then OEM pads, if its your road car. These cars have good brakes out the box, and also you shouldn't upgrade pads unless your doing both ends as the rear is already a little under braked anyway.

Cheers for the advice on the brakes.

Been out for an Italian tune up. Seems to have reduced the depth of the ridges a fair bit, I'll inspect further when it's light and they are cold tomorrow.

There is a microphone up on the right of the driver sun visor, I had assumed this was an alarm mic, also a small plastic block (size of a munchie) right down by the windscreen on the dash. Will get a pic.

The brakes have nearly cleared up after last nights enthusiastic braking. I'll give a few days to see if it clears up further or more action is needed.

Very tidy Euphonic.

I've got an aftermarket TOAD alarm in my car and the mic sensors are mounted on the dash near where it meets the windscreen. It would make more sense to mount a phone mic near the sunvisor I would have thought.

Re brakes, I found standard EBC Ultimax (OE spec) pads to be cheaper direct from this supplier as opposed to mx5parts :

mx5parts are however very competitive on Mazda discs, not so much on Mazda pads.

Looking at most of the parts tables re brakes it would -seem- that 'big brakes' were only found on the Mk2.5 Sport, which also came with LSD and a 6 speed box. But I can't speak from experience.
