I know that advertising your car for sale on the forum isn't allowed so I would just like to point out that this is in no way an attempt to plug my car, but I would like some honest opinions please.

Last year I searched long and hard for a good hardtop-equipped MX5 within my budget, looked at countless rusty piles of utter ste and eventually found mine, which was absolutely gorgeous. Had a few niggles, but I've sorted 'em during ownership.

Now I've had her for sale for two weeks here, on some forums for MX5s and other various marques, and last week bit the bullet and paid for an Autotrader ad too.

And I've had no calls. Not a one. Zero. Nuthin'. Not even an annoying piss-take offer of £500.

I have NEVER had that when selling a car before.

I thought that selling it on would be easy. I thought this was the time of year when people would be looking, and I thought I had priced the car appropriately for age/mileage/spec, but obviously I'm wrong somewhere because of the complete lack of interest.

So here is the ad/car in question: censored

So what's the problem? Is my ad completely st? Is the price just too high? Does the car look THAT poofy? hehe
15 months ago I paid quite a bit more for it, and that was with a faulty Bose radio, scabby wheels, no alarm, and a few other issues which I've since sorted - and given the condition of it what I paid was still a good price back then. Have they really dropped that much in a year?

Seriously, this isn't an elaborate attempt to advertise - I really just want opinions on why it's not generating any interest at all, because I'm flummoxed.

Cheers in advance. cool

You overpaid I'm afraid. Considering in another thread we are talking about an 02 Phoenix which is a cracking 1.8 Special Ed with LSD etc for 4250.

Hang on - how has your car got an LSD being a 1.6?

^ I agree. Sorry, but its well overpriced.

Yesterday we sold our spare mx5, 99T 67k miles, 3 owners from new for £2800. And I thought that was a pretty strong money! ETA and that was a 1.8, no hard top though.

Well although it's an import I always wondered that too...but a Mazda dealer looked up the details and told me it does indeed have one, and its behaviour in the snow suggests it's got one too. It simply doesn't ever just spin one wheel. Or have I misinterpreted that?

Re: overpaying - compared to what was out there in Feb 2010 I would argue that for the time, as I saw a LOT of cars and until I found this one just about everything under £4000 was a shed. laugh
I'm open to considering that it might be worth a lot less now though.

Fair do's....what would you value mine at then?

Do you reckon I'd do better to refit the original stereo and flog the roof separately?

Some advice. Refit original stereo and sell the Pioneer. Same for induction kit, soundboard, hardtop, spare winter wheels, etc etc flog the lot.

Then punt the car on for as near to 2.5k as you can.

Edit: I don't reckon it has an LSD - don't think any 1.6 Mk2's did. I stand to be corrected though.

IMO, you wont get any more / less for a fancy head unit, so if you cant make more swapping the original back I would.

I'd sell the hardtop seperately, and if you can keep it til summer is done and then sell it. You'll get £400 for it I'm sure.

Sure thing.
Just to add for reference since the link has been removed from the first post, I was asking whether £3499 for a 104k '99 mk2 1.6 with hardtop and a buttload of extras was too rich.

(I'm cool with the link being removed by the way - rules is rules. But is it ok for me to say that much? The conversation can't really go any further without that minimum info...)

Too dear I think. The extras rarely add much money. As a guide I recently paid £3450 for a mint (and I mean really mint) '99 1.8 RS with 72k miles on it. This has 6 speed, lsd, Bose, extra bracing etc. I thought I was paying too much but it is completely rust free so I thought it was worth it.

Mine is also completely rust free...to be honest as there is such a complete lack of interest in it as it stands I'm going to follow the advice I've been given, after the bank hol. I'm going to remove all the good bits, sell the roof separately and stick the car up for £2500ono. It's a shame because whoever buys it will probably just want to go out and get all the extras themselves, but if people don't even view it they'll never see what sets it apart from a tattier one that just happens to have another gear and a few thousand less miles.

Just to add re: the LSD issue, its a jap import and my local Mazda dealer didn't even accept that the nb6c vin was real or correct until I took it in and pointed at the chassis plate. Apparently Mazda didn't make a model in the spec mine has....apart from mine and one or two others I saw while looking rolleyes Either way I've had enough experience with cars to recognise when one has an LSD fitted. If it's not factory, could it have an aftermarket kit fitted?

Um… I've just paid £1850 for a '98 Mk 2 with 65k miles, T&T and a new hood. OP's problem I think could be the sheer number of people trying to 'cash in' on the summer charge for MX-5s, which ironically seems to have the effect of depressing the values and making it a buyer's market.

LSD can be confirmed in minutes just jack rear of car up and spin a wheel, if the other wheel spins in opposite direction it aint a slipper.
If it spins in the same direction wahey.

I thought that Viscous LSDs and Torsen LSDs behaved differently so this test isn't fool proof?

3.5k was probably a little optimistic... I just bought my 2000 Mk2 VS 1.8 (6-speed, LSD, Bose, Nardi bits) + hardtop & bag with 52k, FSH, T&T for 2.5k

Overpaying is what I had to do with my car.

10AE, with a hardtop - a reasonable price at around £10 000!!! It's almost impossible to get a Mk2 for anything under 10k, and I've seen a Mk1 car with a hole in the front and back and visable rust sell for around £2000 here!

The problem is all cars are so expensive here that it's still the same different relatively to other cars.

Ours will be on the market in a month or two, what do you guys think its worth?

Mk2.5 'Sport' with all the extras apart from air con (heated leather, 6 speed, LSD, etc.). Has about 45k miles, service history, lady owners.

Will be fully detailed with refurbished wheels, no rust, no issues, ready to go.

Any ideas what we should be asking?

Ohh I don't know *sucks air through teeth*. I'll give you £500 for it. Helping you out - I might be paying too much for it wink

What you getting instead?

Cheers

Hope so - I haven't seen it yet. Ah, the thrill of ebay! drunk
