I'll be sending my MX5 to the garage in the next couple of weeks for a bit of a refresh. It needs a new clutch, as the pedal has recently became stiff and squeaky. It's done 73,000 miles so I expect it needs a new one as this one isn't feeling so good. While it's in I'll get the belts and water pump replaced too.

Can anyone who has had these items replaced advise me with some sort of approximate cost for the work?

Had the clutch donr on my 5 about 2 months ago and it set me back the grand sum of £295 supplied and fitted. That was the qoute I got from more than 1 garage too.

Stiff squeaky pedal sounds more like the clutch cylinder to me - no more than about £50 for that - it's an easy DIY job!

Well, I had heard it might have been the slave cylinder but I thought with the age and mileage a new clutch, belts and waterpump might not be a bad idea?

It's up to you of course, but you don't hear of many clutch failures on the 5. I'd echo thoughts of the slave cylinder.

I'll get the slave cylinder looked at then, and see if that sorts things.

Christ, MX-5 parts want 6hrs labour (@£50 per hour) for a clutch change.

6 hours?! One presumes they are doing it blindfolded?

As said have a look at the slave cylinder first - mine has gone through three of them under my ownership. Around £10 for a replacement, easily DIYable!

Clutch itself is still going strong at 140,000 miles though!

My local Mr. Clutch quoted £260 iirc.
