Fancy getting an mx as a daily driver, but being 6“4 and not slim I don't know if its a sensible choice.

Is there a particular model/seat/wheel como that's favoured by the larger ph`er?

I'm 6ft2" and also not small built. (40" waist and fairly broad.) I fit in quite well. I've done the foamectomy mod, and it's made it alot easier to drive for me. Big air-bag wheel doesn't help much, but it's bloody good fun if a squeeze.

Always baffles the newbies...biggrin

Foamectomy.

The MX5 seats (certain types, at least) have quite a lot of foam padding the backrest and base.

Its possible, and really quite easy, to modify the seats by removing differing amounts of foam, then re-fitting the covers.

By removing foam from the centre sections of the backrest and base, it can make the seat more 'buckety' and also can change the seating position, moving you down, back, or both depending on what you remove.

Its a really cool little trick as it helps in many ways, is really easy, and also reversable.

I'm also 6'4" and even my polite friends call me a fat bd. Last summer I did a road trip with a fellow PHer who had a 1.8 MX5 (I think it was a mk2 if such a beast exists). I was very pleasantly surprised how much room there was, and you really sit down in it, with a very effective heater when needed. My only criticism was that it ran out of steam a bit when driving enthusiastically.

6'5", the Missus has a mk1. It's fine except winding the windows takes a bit of skill because my knee's there.

Actually get more uncomfortable as a passenger.

This sounds very promising. Have any of you larger MX`ers sat or driven an Elise? If so how does the driving position differ?

I ask as Ifind the liz one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven.

Hi,

I'm 6' 3" and a big lad and I fit in OK - but then I made a few modifications including fitting an Elise seat, Momo steering wheel and removing the sun visors. Loads of room now.

Oh, and it's for sale too!

If only you wanted a 1996 beemer tourer as a direct swap...... Exactly what I was after when I looked. Will have to persuade the OH to buy one of these next year when she's finished her postgrad studies

I'm 6 foot 3 and fit in a Mk 1, but believe I'm right in saying that the Mk 2 is a bit more roomy (I've only ever driven one once).

Wrong. Mk1 is more roomy. They are actually pretty much the same shape but the Mk1 has flatter door panels where the Mk2 have moulded door panels that rob some cabin space. It's worse on a Mk2.5 as the seats are thicker so sit higher and give less leg-room.

I'm 6'5" & 18st (built for comfort, not speed). I've just put a deposit on a Mk1 that i collect tomorrow night. It's my first MX5 and i'd never driven one before deciding to get one, much like the OP i assume.

I've planned a 300mm steering wheel, foamtectomy (followed by elise seats when funds allow) and i'll be making custom door cards too - so i can remove the interior door handles. I found on all the test drives i've done that the door handle was actually the most annoying bit, interfering with wear i want my leg to be.

I'm aiming to get right down into the car so that i can get me in, with a lid on, and be under a roll bar. I'm reasonably confident i can acheive that.
