Driver side window not working, passenger side ok.

Took switch mechanism apart again today (worked last time), sprayed all the contacts and contact switches with WD40, gave the wires a wiggle.

End result - both windows not working. mad

Now, I have a "multimeter". I have no idea how it works or what I do with it, but can I use it to check if the problem is electrical / wiring rather than motor-related?

If so, could someone explain in simple terms how I would test this using my tool?

I'm sure this is a silly question, but are you sure the cable hasn't snapped? I've not replaced one myself, but I've been told it's the most common fault of them going and is a pain in the arse to do!

Hmm, don't like the sound of that!

How do I check if it has snapped? Presumably have to take all the interior trim off the door?

Does the NA have the "break your windows" switch that I have in my import NB?

Basically, rock the switch back and forth. If you can hear the motor 'straining' then it is likely a cable problem. If you hear nothing then the switch and multimeter is the correct approach.

I hsve had the cable break on mine. Bit of a PITA to fix, but i got it done eventually......

Good luck....

On the contacts under the plastic switches were the copper contacts black, I did this on mine the other day, they were completely black, rubbed the black away with sandpaper, then used switch cleaner.

I also had a snapped cable on my drivers door a few weeks ago and I could hear the motor trying to work. I got a second hand replacement from a guy on mx5nutz but when I got my friend to fit it back in, it turns out the cables were wound on the mechanism wrong way round so what is up you press down switch and what is down is the up switch laugh
