Hi all

I have lurked for a while as an aveded watch fan. My collection includes a Rolex Daytona, Zenith Port Royal, Omega Planet Ocean 44mm and a Citizen ECO because I liked it !!

I have a serious 'itch' for a Rolex Sub OR Sea dweller prompted by both watches appearing in the window of my local Goldsmiths. Having given both some thought he are my issues which I would like some comments on

1. Which sub do I buy ? The new one or the prvious model. If previous which vintage ?
2. I thought I liked the new Sea Dweller deep sea but having read all the reviews and seeing that almost every Rolex AD seems to have one in there window I am now not sure.
3. This therefore then leads me to the old Sea Dweller. Again same question. If the previous model which vintage ?

I know there are many other watches I could be looking at but as I say I have an itch for one or both of these Rolexs and it needs urgent scratching

Which one is really down to you, there's not much we can do to help I'm afraid! wink
Personally I prefer the older stuff with matte dials as they look much less shiny and as such fulfil the 'tool watch' category for me. If I were to buy a more modern one, it would definitely be prior to the inclusion of the engraved rehaut (around 2006 on a Submariner, never on the Sea Dweller).

Beyond that, it purely comes down to which you prefer aesthetically (be it a vintage or modern & the model) and how deep your pockets are. smile

I have had a "16613" Sub bi-metal with blue dial & bezel, for almost 15yrs now. Worn every day until recently. It has been my favourite watch of all time.

It is currently with Rolex Service as i though it deserving of a service and full refurb. Having a new crystal & bezel, full case polish and strap/clasp polish too. It even comes back with a 12mth warranty from Rolex themselves.

PM me if it is of any interest to you, as I will part with it when I get it back. all boxes/papers/anchor etc

Got it and replied thanks Darren.

Now back on topic........ Choose the Rolex that you like most OP , never worry about anything else. I lusted after my Bi Sub for almost 10yrs before I bought it. Life is too short.

I have a bi-Sub date (sounds a bit dodgy that, but you know what I mean) put to one side at my AD at the moment.

It will be my 40th present from the missus. I have a s/s sub date at the moment.

Torn between having it as an additional watch, or not stretching my finances quite so much and trading the s/s one against it......

I would look at an older sub from Mike Wood where you can be sure you are buying a 100% good buy.

I've had a 16613 "bi sub" from new since 2004. Love it. Go for it. If you can get a second hand 16613, send it straight off to Rolex for some love and you'll have a classic, as new piece for less than a new SS ceramic sub.
I like the idea of the new ceramic one and keeping it for many many years. The deal is good (I think) @ £6K for a brand new one.

I wouldn't buy a Bi-metal Rolex either.
I have a ceramic GMT2 and that's a bit too blingy for me and when they get very scratched they will get brushed to match the rest of the bracelet.

Looks nice, but the one I have put to one side is the blue ceramic and face - it's why I like it.

Appreciate the comments about bi-metals - which is why my preference would be to keep the s/s one as day to day and use the bi as more of an evening out watch.

This is why I (at the risk of hijacking the thread) wanted to get some opinion. I love the watch, but my knowledge is thin. The discount seems strong (£1500) but I appreciate any bi metal rolex bought new will take a bit of a bath.

Is it the equivalent of a brown 911 targa tiptronic with ruffled seats whereas my s/s sub date is the 911C2 manual in black? or not quite that extreme?
