I have a Stainless Steel Automatic Tank Française that is now 6 years old which needs a service and some scratches removing from the bracelet.

I would rather go to a good quality independent than a Cartier dealer, any recommendations?

I agree.
I have a Cartier Roadster. So far, it had to be sent back to Cartier twice in the first year of ownership as it was not auto winding (first repair failed to fix it).
Then about six months ago, it steamed up after doing the dishes, so it went back to get the seals replaced. It came back with a (OK tiny) dent, and a scratch on the rear panel where their technicians screwdriver had obviously slipped.
More than this, every time they have the thing they insist on polishing the life out of it. I can now see that the case is starting to lose some of it's definition.

To add insult to injury, the last service cost me £340 (through Mappin and Webb).

So, in five years, when it needs another service, I'll be going to my local watch servicer(After all, the watch is just a modified ETA.) Cehpus Mckeough, in Southampton. Cephus has done several clock repairs and watch services for me, he seems pretty competent. Cephus is a one man band, does not have a website, but you should be able to find him if you google.

If he is not local to you, take a look at the BHI's website for a list of BHI certified servicers.

My wife has an automatic bi-metal Santos. We had it serviced by Cartier via Goldsmiths. They had the watch 5 months for some reason due to the watch going missing within Cartier whilst it was being serviced. As a gesture of good will they did not charge for the service after I kicked up quite a stink about the poor level of service. When the watch did eventually return to Goldsmiths it did to be fair come back looking like new.

I would not have it serviced by Cartier again.

I would use the independent and certified watch repairer who have serviced my watch and am I very happy with them. These are the guys I use http://www.watchdoctors.co.uk/

This thread rescurrection is good timing (excuse the pun) as I took my Cartier Panthere back into the jewellers I bought it from (second hand, three years ago), with what I thought would be just a new battery. A few days later I get a phone call asking me to bring in the receipt of purchase, which wasn't easy as I bought it from my home area (N Yorks), where I was currently visiting, and not where I live now (Berks). I was a bit confused as to why they needed that but posted it up to my mum, who took it in for me.

Even after my mum calling in and a further follow-up phone call by myself, we're still not sure what the problem is, but one of the assistants, told my mum that on the receipt (message from their local watch repairer) there was writen 'battery ok, needs a new movement', and so the watch needs to go back to their main store for further investigation, as it was that store where it originally came from.

I'm a bit concerned that I've been sold a lemon but the assistant was a bit cagey when I asked them to confirm whether it needed a new movement and "we'll see what head office say". I don't know whether they sold it without doing their pre-sale service or what and I'm waiting for a phone call from them this week. The positive outcome would be that it needs a service - so interested to hear typical costs these days - but, providing they did a pre-sale service, would it need one 3 years later? What's a typical timescale?

Very rarely will a quartz be serviced at the main agent. The movement will likely be replaced if it goes back to Cartier.
