Could anyone name any?
Just a quick impulse thought... If I where to free up £1k-£5k could I buy a watch that would stand a good chance of appreciating in value over the years?

Sorry, its all rather amateur.

TIA

I'd buy the tidiest, matte dialled, full box set Rolex Submariner I could find.
Personally I'd never rely on buying one as an investment, just buy shrewdly and it's a side-effect of enjoying the watch. smile
My Tudor Submariner has had a pretty good return on my investment; it was a 'gamble' purchase from eBay and is worth around 50% more than I paid for it 18 months ago, partly due to them being more valuable now and partly because it was a very good buy. smile

I do like the Rolex's, I'll always remember a certain relative of mine saying they're a bit too common and board rooms are full of them.
I reckon girls my age would think its the nuts though.

Are there any models where the 3rd hand doesn't tick, IE its just one smooth rotation?

You'll find it's quartz watches where the second hand moves in one second steps. Mechanical watches of the quality you are considering, both automatics and manual wind, will have a smooth sweeping second hand.

Possibly Sea Dweller, though I'm wondering if they've hit the ceiling price wise now. They still seem highly in demand.

Non-date Sub from a private seller.

You needed to buy the Sea Dweller a couple of year's ago ideally.

A nice tidy Sub has already been mentioned.

At a lower price point, watches like the Precista PRS-18 & the Broadarrow PRS-3 are appreciating.

I just buy the watches I like & try to buy well so that I don't lose out too badly when I sell.

This.
If you buy purely as an investment, I would be prepared to be disappointed.

Always a risk but I bought one of my Patek's new for £15,000 in May 2007. It is still available and currently retailing for £29,000 so it should be worth more than I paid for it to sell privately.

I sold an old gold & steel GMT Rolex once for double what I paid for it too, but I think these are the exceptions to the rule.

For the cheaper range the Poijot SS-18 seems to be going up in value nicely...
