1-1.5k, something special as a keepsake to Dad
Discussion
Following my Fathers death last week I'll be due a small sum from him, he unfortunately died with very few posessions apart from I hope a host of good memories. As such I'll be due around a thousand from what he had and thought the best way to spend this would be on something I can not only keep but also keep close to me, with a suitable engraving on the back. I'll add 5-600 giving me a budget as per the title but can anyone offer some suggestions of what to get and from where? I want timeless design, ideally a metal strap but happy with the right watch with leather, something of decent quality where I'll be buying mechanicals ratehr than a name so no Armani or Boss please.
As you can imagine this is of incredible importance to me and I want to see his money is not wasted.

Sorry to head about your loss, I currently have my dads old Rolex 16010. He has dementia and stopped wearing it years ago.
1-1.5k should get you something nice, you could get a bog standard Tag Carerra but I think something more traditional would be better.
What ever you decide try getting it via DomH!

Sorry to hear your news, but think the idea of a watch is brilliant
My suggestion would be
http://www.junghanswatches.co.uk/maxbillwatch.htm
Seems to fill most of requirements, only omission being a metal strap.

Sorry to hear about your dad and a great idea to get a watch. And this is a watch forum so nobody will be recommending Armani, Boss, Guess, CK etc here!Describe your dad's character, maybe there is a watch that would match his personality!
Special, you say?
This should be within spitting distance of your budget:

Thankyou evryone, some nice ideas there. I do like the look of some of the Longines as suggested above.
To describe my Dad, hard and not sure I can really do him justice. I know he'd be telling me off for even thinking of spending this much on a watch but in the case - tough! He had his way it'd be a £50 Swatch
He was not one for fancy posessions hence I want a simple, unfussy watch, not one with dials and switches all over the place, though he did appreciate quality and build - eg/ always liked Jaguars etc rather than flimsy tat (though never had a license or drove). He was extremeley generous and would always put his boys (myself and my brothers) above anything else. He was a hard worker, a builder all his life, didn't like fuss but did enjoy simple pleasures - motor racing being a favourite of his. Sitting by the track at Snetterton or Silverstone, cup of tea in hand watching whatever is one of the many fond memories I'll always have of him.

Sorry to hear about your father. Exactly the same thing occured when my dad died and I decided to spend the money he left me on a period desk for my study. Now 25 years on it has gained further patina as I work from it most days and occasionally browse Pistonheads
It's a wonderful piece to remember my father by. p.s. This is of course, just a suggested as an alternative idea you may not have though of.
p.p.s. Chopard Mille Miglia is more traditional looking and has the motor sport connection

Thankyou once again all - some nice ideas. I really like the sound of this one though! A handmade, British watch whereby I guess I'd be paying for the quality rather than the name? though thats my concern as I've never heard of them, anyone else have any opinions? I also like a couple of the Longines and the Monaco Soovy mentioned. This should be within spitting distance of your budget:

As for the used suggestions, I do like the Chopard but TBH I want something new from Dad - can't explain why but it would just feel wrong to buy 2nd hand in this case. If I were buying just for me then yes but as a keepsake from Dad - not sure.
A quote from my Dad, now at peace.
"Quality is enjoyed long after the price and provenance is forgottten".
TAG Monaco, Chopard Mille Miglia or Omega Speedmaster moon watch.
Pre-owned? Doesn't matter.
It's better to purchase something of value than a piece of "tut" new, which is worth nothing and of no substance once you leave the shop.

PS I wish your Dad peace, as I do mine. A GREAT thing to do, to honour him. Something to remember him, a hundred times a day.
Gosh, I am a romantic old fool, non?

Maybe worth thinking about something from the year your parents were married or something like that?
Would open up a wealth of options, and I'm guessing that we're probably talking around the 60's?
If possible I'd be trying to capture the character of your old man as well, and although you've given us hints it's going to be very hard for anyone that didn't know him to do that.
My dad and I share his dad's watch, which is a 1968 Omega Constellation.
Just looking at it reminds me of my Grandad, and his effortless manner.

It's a very personal thing, so go with what you like and think your dad would approve of and sod any snobs on here!

Yes!Although a vintage omega/tag would be more 'special'.
