I've asked on here before - and been given some good responses........but i'm still struggling as a watch amateur. (currently don't own anything at all)

I do want something - budget 2-3k...........

Is the TAG Monaco a good watch? I love the looks, but I want something that won't be common.

I originally was trying to get one watch to do everything, now i'm not. I want two watches I think. Probably a GShock for the rough life style stuff and then a suit watch

It's the suit watch that i'm asking about now...........

I wanted something older if possible.........10, 15, 20 years old.........as I do want something that won't be common. I'm about to be working in Docklands etc - vintage watches seem to be rather out of my budget.

I was looking at the watch club on Bond street

As you have noticed consider 2nd hand you will get more bang for buck.

New wise - 2-3k will get you a nice 'commonish' watch from the usual high street suspects TAG, Omega, Breitling.

Out of those three I would always go for the Omega.

What are you looking for? Smart, sporty, leather, bracelet, chronograph, waterproof, gold or stainless or titanium.

The problem with the brands above is there is a lot of 'brand' expense in the watch which pushes up the price far beyond what they are actually 'worth'.

There are many others e.g. Oris where the brand may not stand for much but they make nice stuff. However you may want 'brand'.

Don't jump at the first one you see - get on Watchuseek/Timezone/PMWF/watchprosite etc and have a look around - there are many small manufacturers offering quality at a fraction of the 'brand names' prices and they are far more exclusive.

I have in my collection a custom made one (from a set selection) - totally to my spec (only 1 in existence - can't get more exclusive than that). and one from a limited edition of 50. Even brand limited editions are in the 1000's.

Lastly second hand - look at Blowers, nice selection or the for sale boards on the watch sites. More exclusive brands like IWC, Zenith, Jaeger lecoutre, Glaschutte, Girard Perregaux etc may start to come in to range.

Overall best advice - don't let the cash burn a hole in your pocket - bide your time, research decide what you want

I'm not a big fan of vintage - so my advice is more around newer <10 years old stuff. I'm surprised you consider vintage to be pricey - appart from high end and some silly price rolex's I would have thought 2-3k would be more than enough

P.s. if your in docklands have a look are the shop at nr Heron Quay - some serious stuff in their window.

great - thanks for taking the time. Lots of info there - i'm going to start having a proper look at your recommendations.

I would go exclusive rather than brand I reckon. As you say, brand in my price range will be reasonably common.

I'd like a dress watch, probably leather strap and waterproof would be desirable but not essential. I don't want to have to worry about it all of the time. I won't be doing water sports in it though. I'll get a GShock for anything like that.

yes but you'll need a few more pennies for those. :-) The lange is spectacular

One thing you will not usually find is dressy and waterproof - I would class waterproof as anything 100m or more most dressy watches are 30-5mm max.

Look an Anonimo - unusual leather kodiac (so waterproof straps) they look Panerai ish in style if you like them. And more unusual and rarer than Pan's

I take it all back - I don't thank you for pointing me at Blowers. biggrin

As now I have way too much choice. I've gone from not knowing what I want to wanting everything. biggrin

I particularly like:

A Lange & Sohne
Panerai
IWC

If it means a little longer and spending 4ish........then so be it biggrin

Welcome to the world of watches!

Soon you'll have a "hit list", talk about your "grail", which will become "grailS", and will start looking at people's wrists to see what they've got on there....

Your 2- 3k has already become 4. Soon you'll find two watches you want at 4k and another at 5.

It's addictive.

And like l'oreal..... wink
