even though I don't approve, generally, of replicas and fakes, I have purchased a couple of the beach vendors of Marbella on recent trips

there are definitely two quality levels and the better one is, aside from the fake issues, built around a reasonable mechanism - bear with me on this a moment

I have a fake Rolex Daytona and, better for these purposes, a fake Panerai something or other that I can't quite find a genuine one like. It has a see through back

Now, by all means share with me in your disapproval, but also note that this is a mechanical, automatic / selfwinder with a very reasonable sweep motion on the second hand. It keeps very good time for a mechanical watch and it was purchased for the princely sum of EUR20 which, imo, is a remarkable price for any watch really.

My knowledge of Panerai watches is limited, but it looks a bit like a PAM00250, without the Tachymeter scale and with the addition of '3', '6' & '9' hour markers.

As a standalone £15 automatic watch, fair enough ... It doesn't matter if the second hand falls off or the movement seizes several months down the road, as you've paid very little from the offset. However with regards to build quality, material quality, reliability and the sense of ownership that comes with a premium watch, it will never compare to the genuine article.

It may be well made etc.
But a FAKE is a FAKE.
Stop buying them and funding crime

I am, you can be sure, under no illusion that the 'panerai' pictured is anything anywhere close to a genuine one

I was merely commenting that a EUR20 'fake' watch like this is probably better value than a EUR20 non fake - in terms of build quality, timekeeping etc.

It is 18 months old and has had quite a bit of stick, still keeps excellent time and is showing no signs of letting go

Some of the lower end fakes that I have looked at would be luck to last for the holiday on which they were bought: there definitely are two 'grades'

€5 from a vendor in Cabo Roig. It was worth the price to see his face when I dropped it in the beer in front of him...
