Just about to bid on a watch, possibly up to £2k

Will pay via paypal, pick up in person and take straight to a stockist for verification

does ebay/paypal protection have a purchase value limit?

how long does paypal hold on to my money in the seller's account for?

thanks

Not sure there is a limit - I'd email and ask - I always worry buying and selling that the higher the value - the one time it'll happen...

Why paypal if you are going to pick up?

Get the verification done before you pay in full.

I give cash and take watch, watch then proves to be a dud and I cannot get cash back

he won't meet me at a stockist - I know, I know

but where is the scam if I use paypal and I can claim payment back as I get proof the watch is fake from the dealer?

So you're picking it up face to face but he won't meet you somewhere where you can verify it? Even if paypal does offer protection, would you really want to go through the hasle of finding out it's a dud and then claiming your £ back?

I wouldn't bother, smells a bit fishy to me.

He'll simply claim you swapped his original watch for a fake and are trying to con him...

Walk away.

Thanks for confirming my fears, had emailed already deciding no cash at dealer = no sale. Advert was not specific to seller and only got good pictures of the watch via email. And feedback had a couple of worrying comments.

Wish I could warn other bidders, or at least find out what happens to the winner

looks like someone is going to pay for £2k+ and may get scammed

It's against their rules to pay via Paypal and collect in person.
They offer no protection in this instance!

Feedback from previous transactions would have put me off.

Would the vendor allow this? In this circumstance the vendor cant prove delivery, so you could make a PP claim and end up with a refund and the watch, if you were so inclined.

Not really the point I realise - more of a general heads-up for those who didnt realise...

So how does one prove the posted item was a fake rather than the buyer swapping a sent original for a fake? Or will paypal just side with the seller?

Seems to me if you use eBay for anything high value - the only thing to do is research the item well so you know what to look for, meet the buyer at a dealer or failing that a home address and pay cash
