When specs of watches talk about the diameter being 36mm, 40mm etc, where exactly is that measured from/to? I have fairly skinny wrists and am thinking of a rolex - am I right in thinking the 36mm models are the smaller mens sizes? Thanks in advance, Andrew

Not a stupid question at all. The measurement is usually from the 9 O'clock position to the three O'clock position, and usually specifies if the crown is included in the measurement or not.

Yeah, if you have skinny wrists, I'd suggest 40mm excluding crown is a maximum for a round case (smaller if square case).

One thing to bare in mind is that the bezel to face ratio can affect the look on the wrist. The smaller Rolex's do wear larger than their size suggests. I have a 38mm Breitling and due to the bezel looks a bit small on my wrists at times. The depth on the other hand gives it some "weight".

This! If you're thinking of spending more than a couple of hundred on a watch, I'd definitely suggest trying on your choice of watch first. I spent just over an hour in a Goldsmiths deciding whether a 42mm or 45.5mm Planet Ocean suited me best ... and then bought from Dom H! hehe
